Avid HAS to playback reliably. Media Composer is literally sometimes used to playback live in a news environment.
I know! But where Avid as an NLE was the main choice for any editor, that market has changed. So TV playout and the broader broadcast environment is your key market
And one more thing! While the talk over the last 18~24 months has been "new engine" and a lot of that talk has originated here from forum members I am sure, Avid hasn't spent much time on posts clarifying the "revamped and improved" angle of the the "new" until we are on the cusp of

It would take years and years to get the type of functionality you would want in anything new. The engine is far reaching into every piece of code in Media Composer.
And I guess that is the rub - if the current base architecture can't continue smooth playback when you

You'll see resolution independence in our 8.3 release in a few days. The video engine has been under a reconstruction for a few years now. Call it new, call it renovate in place or whatever you want. There have been improvements. It's started with 64bit support a few years back, then improvements to fix some of the blip render implementations

Can I ask a dumb question or two related to v8.0, etc.? 1. I have a dongle OK'd for v7.0. IF I wait until the very end of this year-- December 31, 2014, does that mean that I get any and all updates which are released throughout 2015? If you purchases a $299 support contract on December 31, 2014, you will have support and updates through December

The price for $299 is very fair especially when you get technical support and upgrades through the year. I get it, you have not seen the upgrades

That's $25 a month.
As a price point Dave? Nothing. It is still pre-payment for updates the user can't know in advance if he wants them
Can I ask for some clarification on the position of using a subscription on two computers? Yuo say with a subscription you can only use the machine on one machine. Is there no way to de-activate from one and re-activate on another, as you can with the perpetual licence and with Adobe? That seems a serious limitation

  • Re: MC 8.0

Hi, The products you received with version 7, should still run with V8 (these are not formally tested by Avid but we do not know of issues), but the $299 standard Avid support program does not include upgrades to those third party packages. We may provide upgrades to the products that were included with 8 but we do not have plans to do so at this time
