After much time wasted in testing & trying, I may have found the culprit: For my class of (AVID supported) laptop, DELL provides a performance optimization tool called "Dell Precision Optimizer" (DPO) which has a number of pre-learned profiles, supposedly tuned by the manufacturer of each listed app, one of them being "Media Composer

Oh that's great Marianna, thanks - if I could get some hints about where to continue further t'shooting...not knowing what the Db Engine is touching, I have no clue where to search next.

Well, how bad is it ? Very bad ! I uninstalled MC, then carefully deleted all Avid entries in: - [User]\documents - Public Documents - C:\programdata - c:\[user]\appdata\local - c:\[user]\appdata\Roaming - All entries containing "Avid" in the Registry Then I reinstalled MC....and the problem is still there !!!!! I currently have MC "Perpetual" (crossgrade from Symphony) with support plan & annual renewal which is about to expire. Do I understand correctly that, if I don't [timely] renew, I will: be able to use the current version of MC, forever w/o restrictions not be able to upgrade to more recent versions not get any Avid support be able
