yes, all of that is correct. and if by "plenty of RAM" you mean 8GBs or more, then yes. you will need to renew your contract every 12 months from the purchase date to stay up to date with Media Composer, so just be mindful to process the renewal payment on-time to continue to get updates past 12 months.

My understanding of J2K is that it is a VBR codec, where DNxHD is a CBR codec. so when there is more action in the frame, the J2K codec will be fatter, and when there is less action, it will be smaller. whereas DNxHD will use the same compression rate for the entire clip. upside of CBR, you can guarantee file size expectations and quality will be consistent

According to the readme: http://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/README_Avid_Editor_v8_1.pdf Pg 6 - only OSX 10.8.5 and 10.9.4 are supported. You could add a second boot drive and install one of those OSes to run Media Composer 8.

No Avid employee can answer that question, or any question concerning future features and timeframes for releases.

I just ran into this last week. I was able to export the MXF files to a share if i had mapped the network drive to a drive letter on the PC. exporting to a UNC path did not work.
