  • Re: XDCAM vs DNxHD

XDCamEX-35 is going to look FAR superior to DNxHD-36 or whatever the lowest DNxHD rate is in any given framerate, in all situations. That rate is intended for offlining/draft quality, where you have a large quantity of media and want to save space while you evaluate shots early in a project. Because of the nature of each format - where XDCam is a long

  • Re: AMA and Link replaced by SOURCE BROWSER

The Source Browser is just an additional option, not a replacement. It was announced in release notes and Avid blogs to show new features. You can still link the old way, and I often still do exactly that. XDCamEX and XDCamHD have been editable in MC for years, and they still are. The source browser changes nothing about what formats can be edited.

  • Re: transcoding strategy

There are different ways to do it. What I probably would do is select all the clips in your bin, transcode them to proxy, and then put them in a different bin. Select the proxy clips, and deselect the linked clips. Right-click your sequence, RELINK. Use the option "Selected items in ALL open bins." Near the bottom of the window, you may need

  • Re: XAVC in MP4 wrapper import and link errors

EditReady simply rewraps the existing H.264 media without re-encoding it into MOV files, joins any spanned clips, maintains timecode and metadata. It's a very fast process. Or, you can transcode within the app to another format if you so choose. Then, you can link those files and transcode them in Avid as needed. The developers are responsive, helpful

  • Re: XAVC in MP4 wrapper import and link errors

Do you know which exact kind of XAVC media it was? There are three. XAVC-S, XAVC-L, and XAVC-I. Sony continues to stubbornly refuse to support XAVC-S in its XDCam plugin, so it won't work. The other two work fine. You'd link to the folder ABOVE the PRIVATE folder. A few options - for one, you can use EditReady to rewrap the files, in the same

  • Re: transcoding strategy

Personally, I like the "proxy" resolutions for transcoding raw media in MC 8.4. It's a great new feature. You can use DNxHR-LB, at either 1/4 or even 1/16 of the original frame size. It doesn't look very good, but if all you have to do is evaluate content, it works great, and the files are small. The transcode also seems to be significantly

  • Re: what storage solution do you use?

Thunderbolt is out there, but a multi-drive USB 3.0 array should work pretty well too. HD media used to work pretty well on multi-drive FireWire 800 arrays, remember. There are also networked solutions that use ethernet or fiber, but those are meant more for multi-user environments, such as Avid NEXIS, SNS EVO, EditShare, Indiestor, and a few others

  • Re: Import Mxf from old project into media composer

You should not be creating a project or bins inside the Avid MediaFiles folder. There should be nothing but media files in there. Do you have maybe a screenshot of how your folder is structured right now, removing any personal information? That might help us figure out what's going on and get everything in the right place.

  • Re: DNxHR SQ playing back in low res

If they started as linked media, and you didn't change the framerate, then link the media again, SELECT all the linked clips in the bin, make sure your transcoded clips are NOT selected. Right-click your sequence, RELINK, use the "Selected items in ALL open bins" option, and it should relink.

  • Re: Import Mxf from old project into media composer

Exactly - Avid should just automatically detect Avid MediaFiles if they're in the right place and named correctly. If you still have your project files, just open up your project, and the media should just automatically be online. No linking, importing, nothing to do. If you lost your project files, then you'd use the Media Tool to locate your
