I am editing a Red project on DS 10.3. I am always confused as to what should be the setting of the raw files when importing in DS.
My main issue is color management when bringing in the .r3d files into DS. I have no idea as to what should be the Color Matrix and Gamma Curve. Should I change the other parameters like ISO, Exposure, Contrast and others. If I bring in the files as default without changing any parameters the clips looks very flat. Is it possible to apply the original setting from Red One camera to the files when importing them in DS? Henry

There is no rules, i try to get them in as flat as possiable, while maintaining as much of the data as possiable, i also white ballance before de-bayering... this to keep the image as clean as possiable
But if you select "metadata" and what ever gamma & matrix was used on set you should be close to what the DOP was thinking.
I always check the metadata, to see what they were thinking, then ignore them, and get as much data off the raw files as i can... and in maybe 80% of the time i can get more info in the shadows and highlights than the metadata would have
I never use default.
hope this helps
d.
Thanks Dermot, you are always helpful.
Now, how do I check the metadata of the .r3d files? Do the folder also contain RSX or RLX preset file? If not, can I ask the DOP to save one for me in future shoot? I could not see any of those files anywhere in the Red folders.
