Possible this is a very silly question but Avid is doing something I haven't seen before.

I've transcoded a bunch of camera clips (UHD, HEVC, ProRes, UME linked) into proxy media (1080p DNxHR LB). No frame rate adjustments, but some colour encoding and frame flex.

Some of the transcoded clips now have two video tracks. They appear to be identical, monitoring each indivdually gives the exact same result. I've had some other funny behaviours and crashes with MC and this group of clips, but I'm baffled as to what is going on here.

Obviously I can work around the issue, but I'm curious and confused as to what has happened. Any advice or thoughts gratefully recieved as forum search gave no results.

As far as I'm aware, there shouldn't be two files in the Avid mediafiles folder with identical names.

From the transcoded master clip in the bin, when you 'reveal file', which version does it show?

It's possible you have two versions if you had a crash after transcoding, but before Avid was able to do a save. The media file would now be 'orphaned' since it's master clip was lost in the crash.

Bruno, I do not think your question matches the OPs description.  I read it as there are 2 V tracks for some clips i.e. V1 and V2!!  Which is something I have never seen.  But maybe I am misreading the message.

That's exactly right. A clip with V1, A1-2 becomes a media file with V1-2 , A1-2 on transcode. Both video tracks appear to be identical!

I think Bruno's question was: has Avid created two identical mxf files, or is the clip just got two tracks of the same file.

If you "show mediafile names" in your timeline you should be able to ascertain whether they are the same file.  I assume they are the same file (but who knows?  worth checking).

And just in case, you're sure it's not a Data Track?

I could swear I was at an Avid-sponsored talk long ago, where a new feature was described which always perplexed me: an online/offline workflow where one masterclip could have a low-Rez AND a high Rez file associated with it... or did I just imagine that?  Something about transcoding...or “dual mixdown”

Avid has always been able to have multiple media files associated to a master clip.

Thats how relinking originally worked it was effectively how you controlled what media a master clip used.

It was repurposed to handle AMA linking and relinking.

If you delete a master clip in a project thats linked to more than one media format the delete box lets you chose which of the resolutions you delete.

I think in bigger setup the ingest setup can make online and offline media associated to a master clip and you then use the relink command to toggle which one is active.

Thanks very much, Pat. It is amazing how Avid has evolved and supported a variety of workflows along the way. I would assume there's no history of MC making a V1 AND V2 masterclip....but what about an Autosynced clip? Or do they always look like the smaller subclip?

regarding the original issue above, is there any chance what's seen is caused by a corrupt timeline View setting?
