    DNxMXF and metadata

    Hi,

We are looking into using the new DNxMXF extension to read and write MXF files for interop with MediaComposer. I did not find if or how we can read and write some basic metadata fields. The basic ones we are interested in are:

    - Timecode

    - Material, Source and Original Source Package UIDs

    - Tape/Reel name

Is the plan to augment the SDK to support these fields?

    Thanks,

    Eric

    Hello Eric,

Timecode - yes, this is planned for the next DNxSDK release

Material, Source and Original Source Package UIDs, Tape/Reel name - no plans to support.

The DNx MXF interface is intended for clients who have no MXF-specific processing needs and only require a standardized way to read/write DNx-encoded essence from/into a file format which can be read/written by other applications without problems (by virtue of the DNx MXF interface). It is explicitly not intended as a replacement of a full-featured MXF SDK, which allows explicit control over MXF-specific details, or as a replacement for the Avid Media Toolkit (AMT) Media Composer interop API (available free of charge for DNx from Avid). The DNx SDK will only support generic metadata (non-MXF specific) and only to the extent that they are defined in SMPTE ST 377-1. None of the requested elements qualifies under these criteria.

As the question is about Media Composer interop we strongly advise the use of AMT, which is provided specifically for this use.

    Thanks,

    Viktor

    Hi Viktor,

I understand. We are looking for a solution that works on Linux (and Mac)...
