Relink clips using a different plugin (escaping Quicktime)

    MC 8.9.2..

I have a project started on an older version (don't know for sure, sometime before 8.9.1 though) with a bunch of linked material, h.264 Quicktimes. All of the original master clips in the bin are marked as using Quicktime for the plugin used, which is of course complete garbage and can't play back without freezing up and dropping frames constantly (1080p/2997, nothing special.)

I unlinked all the clips, made a new dummy bin and brought in fresh copies of all the clips using Avid Generic. These work great. But when I try to Relink the original master clips (which are used in group clips and ultimately several sequences) they stay as using the 'Quicktime' plugin.

So, how the heck do I modify/relink all these clips using the 'Avid Generic' plugin so the thing will play correctly?

Re: Relink clips using a different plugin (escaping Quicktime)

Have you tried the Relink option of "Sequences and all selected clips" or something named like that?

Here you select the sequence you want to link and in another bin (and maybe bins) all the source clips you want to relink.  This is pretty robust.

This problem may be caused by wrong timecode-handling of the Avid Generic Plug-in. This is especially evident in MC 8.9.x versions, where the start timecode of a clip was give one frame earlier than the actual start-timecode of the clip when using QuickTime Plug-In. As relinking relies on start-timecodes of the clips, relinking will always fail. Until this problem will be solved by vid, the best workarround is to use Resolve. Select alll clips in Resolve and place thzem on a timeline. Then run an export with "Avid" selected (OP1 export of MXF-files). The resulting MXF-files cann be copied into the Avide Mediafolders. Create a new folder under Avid Medifiles\MXF\<number> (e.g. number 100) and coppy all Resolve created files into this folder. Open MC, create a new bin, and import the .mdb file from the new created folder. You will get all clips in the be bin.

Now you can relink to these new clisp.

I actually checked this before I tried anything, linking the same clips with both plugins and comparing both the timecode and the visual result to make sure everything would behave the same.

The relinking was otherwise working fine, it's just that the plugin on the original master clips was set to Quicktime and it seems they will not budge.

I finally got it to work (mostly) by deleting all of the old/original master clips completely (but leaving the Group clips they were used in), then bringing new clips back in with the Avid Generic plugin, and finally doing a Relink on one of the sequences I needed to revise. This seems to have gotten at least the used shots working in the sequence and re-attached that camera's media to the Group clips.
