Disable access to drive in avid?

I'm using Avid in an enterprise situation (college) and I work in IT.

We're updating builds in preperation for the school year and I have an odd question.

While I'm familiar with system drive filtering, I was wondering if there is a way to filter out other drives?  We have a local workspace partition where students are allowed to store project files etc, but we'd like to disable their ability to import media into it. No matter what the teachers say, kids always do and it can be time consuming for them and us as this partition will be wiped every night.

In our last build, the local workspace partition was greyed out, i'm just not sure how our previous IT guy did this.  Is there a way to either trick avid into thinking this is the system drive or a network drive, or otherwise disable it's selection?

I've been looking into console commands, something similar to the alldrives command, but in reverse, and have had no luck.

    Thanks!

An old trick is to create a textfile named Avid MediaFiles.txt in the root of that drive and then remove the txt extension.

I've thought about this, but our local workspace partition is still selected by default by avid.  It errors out on import which is good, but this will just create one more question from our users.

If there is a more elegant method that will just disable it all together I'd love to know it.

Otherwise, good idea, we'll use this and let the students figure it out as they go.

    thanks.

So I'm unable to actually implement the Avid MediaFiles.txt trick..

    Any other ideas?

If I understand you correct you want them to be able to read from that drive but not write to it.

Now I am speculating a very very lot, maybe this isn´t even workable, we all know that Avid can read from all the folders in the media library but will only write to the folder " 1 " initially until that one is filled up.

I have no idea how Avids knows that it is filled up and what will happen if Avid otherwise cannot look into that folder, if a number 2 folder will be created by itself, if so my trick will not work.

The trick I am thinking of is to use the textfile trick creating a 1.txt document in the Avid media library removing the txt extension so that itis only named " 1 "

If you are enough brave to try that please tell how it works .

The " read only " folders should be named with letters and not digits.

I think you are hoping for a solution that allows read write of project files and possibly otehr assetts just not media creation files?

So you can't solve this with permissions.

The best you can do is to use the locked "Avid MediaFiles" solution (and there are a number of ways of doing this) and having the students recieve the warning. The warning then becoems a teaching aid to remind them that one of the first things they should be doing in MC is checking Media creation settings!

Drive filtering based on resolution is the only way I know of greying out a drive.
