Hello all,
Just out of curiosity here.... I have a 10 channel Prores QT; my audio mapping is: L/R/C/Lfe/Ls/Rs (1-6), Stereo Broadcast (7-8), Stereo Web (9-10). When i bring it into Symphony, I change the source audio settings to match what i just described, but when I bring it to the timeline with 5.1 and stereo tracks, the waveforms are not showing me the correct 5.1 mapping i chose and the mixer does not seem to show it correctly either.
I know the Lfe channel for this mix is basically empty, but instead of the mixer and the timelime show it on track 4, it's showing it on track 6. Is this correct? The impression i have right now is that Symphony is setting up the source setting as 5.1 Film instead of SMPTE, even though i can clearly see it checked as SMPTE.
My experience is that 5.1 in avid is messed up.
If you modify the clip to be 'film' order then I think you'll find it will come out in 'smpte' order.
Beware doing audio mixdowns with a mixture of 5.1 and stereo / mono sources as you'll probably find the tracks reordered in ways that are not predictable.
Any 5.1 mixdown will be set to 'film' order too. But will (maybe) be the correct (smpte) order.
Needs some attention from avid.
Just confirmed it, the options for 5.1 sound are reversed. And i have read on the manual about the 5.1 film monitoring, which sounds rather weird. I would like to have the option to choose how i want to monitor the sound.
I think it comes from errors in the protocols code. Aiui even film work is now largely smpte order.
You can choose how you monitor.
Safest currently is direct out and select the routing you require. Downside is that you lose ability to pan, but it's such a gotcha that I'd rather sub sequence sections that need panning and mixdown.
Linear acoustic have a plug in version of their upmax algorithm (which works v well creating 5.1 from 2.0) coming out next month. Also has monitoring options for lkfs but avid lacks bussing for that to be much use.
Shame not to see improvements to 5.1 editing yet - but at least it is now possible, I've spent the past two weeks doing tight turnarounds in discrete surround. As good as the upmax is, it's better to keep the real thing.
We edit 5.1 also but have to mixdown to mono each track to then export as QT ref for .GXF file. Is there a way to batch mixdown 1-6 instaed of doing each individually? You can EXPORT 1-6 together but not mixdown 1-6 together....hmmm.
You can certainly mixdown to a 5.1 clip. Good chance the outputs will be in the wrong order.
You do need 8 channel monitoring (e.g. Nitris) to enable the 5.1 mixdown to fully put things in the wrong place though (otherwise it'll match your stereo mix and put left on track 1 and right on track 3).
If you are using send to playback then you can set the transfer settings to direct out - or use the mix feature in there - which will do mixdowns on multiple tracks (works to EVS up to 16 channel for sure).
5.1 mixdowns apper to have been fixed in v8.6 (i.e. you can now mix a 5.1 SMPTE source and a 2.0 stereo source sent to Front L&R and a 1.0 mono source sent to Centre and have them correctly positioned in the resultant mixdown).
Side-chaining also appears to work now in limited testing.
