Hi There
I'm new to the XDCam Ex game! I've figured out how to get my .mp4 clips via AMA into my Avid 5.0.3, and I've figured out how to merge two folders in the XDCam Browser created on 2 different cards for the same project. What I'd like some advice on is the best workflow involving these for an ongoing project.
I.E. A project where footage is coming in in dribs and drabs and I'm AMAing it into the Avid. Obviously for the edit we want to work off the same external drive, but I can't just plonk new footage into the CLIPR folder as and when it comes in can I?
Does this mean I will have to do a 'merge' folder every time I want to put new footage into the project? Is it then best just to wait for the end of shooting and do an AMA link with everything at the end?
I hope this is clear enough, thank you for your help.
Best
Jack
We normally discourage any merging.
Retain Tapeless media in folders that represent the original card contents.
Once a card has been shot on and copied off wipe it and start a fresh.
Then add new folders to the master and backup drives and AMA them in as they appear.

Hi
Thanks for replying. I assumed that you can't have two BPAV folders on the same drive and that they have to be at the top of the drive?
What would your preferred file structure look like then on a drive with all the footage on it, but footage that was copied onto it peicemeal over a couple of months?
Thanks
hi jack,
like pat said, avoid merging.
good file structure can be - shoot per day "24042012_001", "04242012_002" etc. (date depends on region)
but don't use illegal characters.

I write the above HDD/project name / date / number cards. For larger projects, but still recommend consolidation of the material in the internal AVID Avid media folders.
Reliability and speed of the project is then higher. V.
I use a master project folder and then dailies folders labeled with date Card 1 card 2. Next date card 1 card 2 etc Has worked well with on a project with over 80 cards here.Q:\WOW2012\06April card 1\Q:\WOW2012\06April card 2\Q:\WOW2012\07April card 1\ etc
Thanks for all the replies guys. So I'm guessing that I would put the BPAV folder from each SxS card into the bottom folder of these structures?
So for example:
2012/PERI/260412/Card 1/BPAV
2012/PERI/260412/Card 2/BPAV
2012/PERI/270412/Card 1/BPAV
And with BPAV not at top level on the drive I would still then be able to access it via AMA?

Just follow the link to AMA volume, one folder higher than the BPAV. (in your case, Card 1 ..). V.
