Mac Tower, fast drives, plenty of ram, blah blah
I am just a logger working on an avid (6.0 and tiger) for the first time. I have a single monitor so I have to constantly move bins etc. If I am active in one bin and then want to click something in another, I get the spinning beach ball for at least 5 seconds - for real!. This is insane! How do editors work with this? I am not editing, just loging. When I am working within a bin, all is well. I am constantly opening and closing and moving bins and have to wait 5 seconds evdery time I touch a new bin. What can I do to stop this insanity?

Yep. Randy beat me to it.

Jeff - Sounds like you get the rare pleasure of yelling at the editor you are logging for. Apple OS Tiger hasn't been supported since the last U.S. Presidency.
Your system may be able to be upgraded though. Check out the specs here http://cdn.pinnaclesys.com/supportfiles/attach/422411/MacQual_MC_SY_v6_10_17.pdf
Report back if you need assistance doing so.
Cheers!

I guess I am insane to begin with I MEANT LION! Sorry guys
What are the rest of the system specs?
2x2.8 Ghz Quad core Intel Xeon, 12 GB 800Mhz DDR FB-DIMM
Avid 6.0
OSX 10.7.3
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
Local storage or shared? What type of drives and how many? How connected?
Is the footage AMA?
Also, FYI 10.7.3 technically is not qualified either. Only up to 10.7.2 at this point in time.

It used to be AMA but my other job was to transcode to XDCam 50. I can't believe it is the footage or drives because I am only talking about moving bins. It is all local storage JBOD (5 disks) via Esata
I'd also look at getting v6.0.1, because it fixes a ton of issues.

The slowness you are describing sounds more like something other than Media Composer is consuming your system's resources. Shut your system down completely (not a restart) and open Activity Monitor. Wait a few minutes and watch what's going on. If it seems like barely anything, open Media Composer, and watch it again.
I had a system do this which was running MC6. The culprit was PhraseFind indexing in the background. (Which I was able to see in the Activity Monitor before MC was started). Once we upgraded to 6.0.1, the problem went away. May not be your issue, but let's approach it step by step and logically.
