Large Media Export for Non Avid editors?

I handle all our field production and responsible for organizing and importing our footage. In the past I have been the only editor, but this year we are subcontracting several editors in other states. I am trying to figure out the best work flow for this situation. I need to select the clips from many hours of footage and then send it to the other editors for editing of different projects.   I cannot send them the master tapes to import so I need to organize, rough cut then export the footage in an uncompressed format that they can import into Final cut pro, premier and other non Avid systems.  What is the best way to do this? Would I need to rough cut and lay it to a timeline then export the sequence as a certain file? Can I organize footage in Bins and then do a mass media export or copy the media to another hard dirve in a format that is not Avid encoded? Thank you very much!!!

Possible solutions in order of best workflow.

    1.  Define this as an Avid- Premiere- or FCP-based project and ensure that every editor working on it is using the same version of the software.  For a host of material management reasons MC would be my first choice.

    2.  Export AAF files of your selects using DNxHD x if HD or 1:1x if SD.  Ensure that each editor has the appropriate Avid codecs.

    3.  Output mixdowns of your selects in a high quality codec of choice.

Just remember that someone will probably have to bring this mess back together, so the problems that you encounter with mixed NLEs will probably be bidirectional.

Also remember that if you're the coordinating editor on this project you will almost certainly need to be able to adjust the off-site edits.

Great!!!  It would be nice if I could get all editors on MC but I dont think that is possible.

On suggestion number 3...is there an alternative way to output without having to drop everything to a timeline, mixdown, then export the sequnce? Is there a way to export multiple clips directly from the bins?

Thank you very much for your help!!!!!

    Hi,

    Field Hudnall:
Is there a way to export multiple clips directly from the bins?

Sure.  Select a bunch of clips you want to export, right-click and select Export.  That's it.

    ciao,

Re: Large Media Export for Non Avid editors?

    A few thoughts - I have done this - Ireland, Vancouver, Shanghai, LA, Delhi, London all shareing projects, on diffrent systems, we FTP'd DNx36 media + AVB, got the AVB back as we already had the full rez media on our arrays;

    1) why are you sending ful rez when you have those at home base, and you are compileing the final at homebase already? Would it there be any workflow advantages to sending Dnx36?

    2) send avid Dnx media straight from your disk + AVB, meaning no export/render for you

    3) invest a tiny amount in Automatic Duck, and have anyone working on a non-Avid  system do the same so they can open your AVB and read the media in their system, and then return to you only AVB washed through their licence of AutoDuck.. you already have the full rez media, so open their bin and away you go....

ps...  you keep your licence of AutoDuck for sorting the issues that will arrise, you would not need it if everything goes perfectly, but it won't....

    d/

to be clear - we kept the full rez on a server, digitized into a MC @ 36, ftp'd everywhere, got AVB back, checked it in one of our MC's, then sent an AFE to a DS that linked back to the full rez on the server.. i also have a licence of both CS (mainly used by GFX artists) and FCS (mainly used by our receptionist as her email machine).. but are there for me to use if needed to sort issues... i suspect i have a fair bit more infrastructure to rely upon than the orignal poster has at hand tho...
