How much dos the new Avid DS list for without hardware?
Avid DS Software Only v10.5 $9,995

Also, there seems to be a discounted bundle with Sapphire: http://www.avid.com/us/specialoffers/genarts
Wonder if there will be a BCC bundled offer as well.

That would be nice, but no idea if it's on the cards at this stage.
Also, why not a Monsters or Tinder bundle? They're all owned by Genarts these days.

So if you get Media Composer 5 for free when buying DS, will there be a discount for those who already own Media Composer 5 to lower the price with the sum of the cost of Media Composer 5?
Feels kinda weird that I payed alot of money for MC and then you get it for free with DS.Is it just me?
64 bit, GPU acceleration, better AMA, better exports with GPU acceleration, better grading with true secondary and lift gamma gain, higher resolutions (4K, 5K etc.) and a video stream online (for directors being far away on the phone or skype).
That would blow ANY competition away and it will be future-proof MC for a long time.
Glans:Is it just me?
It certainly isn't me.
I must say I really don't see what the connection is between buying MC at a very reasonable price... compared to a few years ago, and paying rather a lot of money for DS just to get MC included in the price.

Nope - it simply means that now you'll have TWO Media Composers :)
If I paid $120k for my DS 4 years ago, does that mean that Avid should now gve me 12 licenses? No, I thought not.
Hi, Somebody knows the upgrade price fron V8.4? (without hardware).
Thanks
Regards
Rob.
RobertoMFS:Somebody knows the upgrade price fron V8.4?
Hi,
Upgrade DS v9.x or prior to DS v10.5x Software Upgrade
$5,995
There are some things non-DS users need to understand about the included MC license.
First - it is included because DS currently has very limited file import capabilities. It is needed to "wash" many formats so that DS can use them. Avid is not giving it to users as a come on or bonus. It patches some severe weaknesses of DS as it currently stands.
I say that as a fan and user of DS. But perspective buyers need to understand this.
Second, I believe the MC license is not as portable as a normal license. This was discussed recently on the Google Groups DS list. I am a bit unclear on that. But most users will want it on the same CPU as DS it's purpose is really as an import tool. And since DS is using AJA Kona 3 as IO, MC will not be able to do normal SDI/HDSI IO on that CPU (with out installing a MOJO DX or NITRIS DX which could really screw things up - or not).
So bottom line, don't look at the MC included with DS as being a new MC seat for your facility. Think of it as a bandaid for DS.
My opinion on the last sentance.

A thought related to the Genarts bundle discussion. I brought this up on the Google DS Group, and I will bring it up here.
MC is bundled with Boris CC.
Avid advertises "Quickly move projects from Media Composer to DS—without any re-creation—using Advance Conform".
This is hard to accomplsh in a MC project that uses Boris CC.
I feel that DS should be bundled with Boris CC. Or marketing should review it's advertising claims.
I think we need some clarification here.
Firstly, DS doesn't (currently) support Long-GOP source media. Therefore, any format that uses Long-GOP (like XDCamEX HD) must firstly be transcoded. MC is a good tool for performing this transcoding and the transcoded media will then play natively in DS.
DS natively handles DPX, Red, Cine, and many more high-end file formats, all the way up to uncompressed 4:4:4.
Secondly, the copy of MC bundled with DS is exactly the same as anyone would buy for $5k direct from Avid. I don't know what you mean when you refer to it as being "not as portable" or "normal license"; it's a fully-functional extra seat of Media Composer which can be installed on any computer within (or indeed outside) your facility.
By way of example, the work that I do rarely requires me to ingest Long-GOP media, so my copy of MC is used in a completely different room as an extra offline suite. Because I've kept it dongle licensed, it's easy to 'steal' the dongle for 5 minutes if I have to for instance create an AFE for my DS from a supplied Avid bin - I just get the offline editor to go for a coffee.

Why? I do so every day of my working life. Okay, I had to purchase BCC for DS, but that's only possible because Avid worked closely with Boris to achieve a high-level of conform from MC with BCC to DS with BCC.
I do wish that Avid FX (basically a version of Boris Red that's been ported to MC) was available for DS, because if that's been used in the offline, then it's a pig to recreate on DS. Sometimes impossible.
tonyjover:Secondly, the copy of MC bundled with DS is exactly the same as anyone would buy for $5k direct from Avid.
This is what I mean... if people get a free copy of Media Composer (and that's alot of free), then if I who already own Media Composer 5, get DS, I should get DS for a less price, since I payed for MC5. Paying alot for DS a few years ago isn't the same, MC5 was released this year. So if Media Composer 5 is worth $5K, then if the whole DS package is $10K, it should be $5K for Media Composer owners??
But all in all, it's just a wish. I think lightworks open source is a good alternative to DS?
