Agreed.  It makes no real long-term sense to handicap one to benefit the other.....

    What? Both? ;-)

Seriously: quite tricky to lose that brand name. Also: how to deal with the extra investments of Symphony owners?

Really, Media Composer is the flagship brand for Avid.  It would not be that tough of a hit.  Just look at NAB this year: nary a Symphony in the booth and everyone was clamoring over the new release. **EDIT**  It was all about Media Composer.

Like it or not, this happens in our business.  Someone always has to be the last one to buy before the price cut.  As Avid has done in the recent past, offer a nice upgrade for those who have purchased in the last 12 months or so....

Which does not mean that it should remain the ONLY brand.

Or by the same logic, you could kill DS.

Like when DS v8.4 came out and it was HD-ready for all versions.  Anyone who'd paid the 40k premium for the HD version of previous releases just had to watch everyone else move up to the same standard for no extra cost.

Yes, I was one of those who had to swallow the pill.

Thirded - but I can hear the screams of protest from LA all the way over here.

Re-name DS to Symp, add the Euphonics control surface, dark UI, real 3D comp'n and full on AFE & AMA..

They could call it d-vision for all i care, renaming it Symp could be a good thing.. if it could be marketed properly... alot of "could" in there tho....

hmmm, let see, there are a lot of other products Avid offers, so in that level of post, yes, you could have one product that covers it all.  Why have two that are so close to each other?  Name it Symphony if that carries more weight.  The idea is to get to one product from two nearly identical ones (as you stated).  OR, really make Symphony stand apart, but you think the much much larger MC base is gonna stand for that?  Its a bit of a lose-lose.

    Job ter Burg:
Depends from which way you look at it.

You have to do it and move on.  Take the legs out of the story, as they say in politics.  You think a lof of Symphony folks are jumping to FCP because it's merged with Media Composer?  Not likely.  There will be a lot of bi***hing about it, but it will die down after a while.  Its all about Avid having the guts to just do it.  Right now, I don't see the coprorate backbone.

Well, DS is a good answer, with free training, or  multiple MC upgrades, or nothing at all.

Agreed.  I couldn't care less what they call it (just no more N name confusion please!).  I'm not passionate about DS, I'm passionate about its capabilities.  The name is pretty much irrelevant at the end of the day.

    Exactly.

How about "Media Compositor DX" for a new name?  Oh...I better not say that too loud, they might actually like it. Wink

Media Composer Nitris DX and Media Compositor Nitris DX.  Perfect! I don't see any potential confusion.

    Sorry for the thread hijack.

I agree with Igor's recommendations.  MC needs the Symphony CC/Tracker if it's going to survive.  Still not enough for me to want to use it on a regular basis, but it'd be one less objection.

You should apply for a job at Avid - your thinking is spot on Wink
