    Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

Why can't the window for DNxHD Codec Configuration be large enough to actually see what Alpha setting I am using and which Codec resolution I have selected from the drop down menu?  All of the options are overlapping each other.  Off the top of my head I know that I encounter this problem when dealing with Adobe Media Encoder and Squeeze.  Has anyone else run into this problem or is it something with my computer?

Re: Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

I am seeing the same thing in both Squeeze and Media Encoder.  Once I figured out that you can click on the very bottom-middle of the window, you can drop down all the options and actually pick the one you want!  Then clicking on the partial button below the alpha channel settings saves and exits. (OK button?)  I don't see how you can change the alpha setting but so far this hasn't been an issue.  It is critical to match the codec setting with the project setting if you want your video to fast import.  I downloaded the 3.5 version to see if the problem is fixed but it is not.  Maybe in the next update...

Actually, I think the problem lies within Quicktime, not Avid MC.

    The same in Streamclip.

After you make the selection of the sub codec hit tab and will bring up the OK button to press.

    Weird behaviour.

I thought this was a Quicktime issue, but when I go into Quicktime everything looks good.  Weird.

Re: Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

Im on a PC Win7 and using Adobe Ppro and After effects. I did install the DnxHD codec 2.1LE I downloaded from the AVID website. With the config window I can see options for Alpha channel but no matter I cannot highlight any of the radio buttons to enable this.

Im trying to render out an animation from After Effects with alpha but using DNxHD it doesnt seem to export it - is there anyway I can use the avid codec and include an alpha channel?

    Thanks

Re: Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

Certain apps seem to tell the codec to open it's own property window, which are too small in this case (and apparently those Alpha radio buttons are broken too.)  Others open with a much more expanded codec window with a different layout -- like Quicktime Player its self, and those seem to work.

I reported the smashed window months ago and provided them with a lot of information, but they've not yet managed to fix the codecs' properties window.  I never noticed the Alpha radio buttons were broken too... No

Re: Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

Yes well the Alpha radio buttons are 100% broken - not just unpressable as you can actually tab navigate through the various buttons and elements - the two radio buttons at the top which is 709 or RGB you can just hit the space bar and it will change the selection - this also works in After effects BUT the space bar simply will not turn on the radio buttons for the Alpha options - only 709 or RGB.

If I just open quicktime player - import something with an alpha channel and then export that using DNxHD - I can select the alpha without a problem and it renders it correctly.

    This is very frustrating :-(

What version of Adobe and Quicktime are you running?  Have you had any luck with trying to select one and then changing your settings in the AE render cue from RGB to RGB+Alpha?  It seems that I ran into this same issue, but found some work around for it.  I see if I can replicate the issue.  I am now running CS5 Production with MC 5.0.

Im running CS5 and quicktime is 7.6.6 - as I said I dont have any avid products or NLE installed - just the DNxHD 2.1LE codec from their website.

Don't hold your breath for this to be fixed anytime soon. I've seen this problem since I started using the DNxHD codecs, 3 years ago. Despite numerous complaints, nothing has been acknowledged, nor fixed. Avid points a finger at Qt and QT points a finger at Avid. Ya gotta love this community.

lol - yeah I think Im just going to bite the bullet and spend the $ to go with Cineform. The way I see it with DNxHD is you've got 3 camps - Adobe - Apple and Avid - all competitors and neither wanting to step in and fix anything that isnt directly related to their piece of the pie.

Also from the limited testing I've done with Adobe Mercury playback engine, DNxHD doesnt play well at all whereas cineform edits and stacks (multiple layers, PIP) like butter.

Re: Avid DNxHD Codec Configuration Window

Interesting read - I was also searching for a good codec to use that included alpha channel support - Cineform Neo does BUT only in their Neo4K and up offerings which is $999 ($500 more than NeoHD which lacks the ability to encode with an alpha channel)

Anyway I found this link: http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=7&ved=0CEgQFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Feugenia.gnomefiles.org%2F2008%2F09%2F15%2Fintermediate-codecs-the-face-off%2F&ei=CZxXTKjhJM3McJ_G0MEI&usg=AFQjCNEmGqRtmOPiEp3TZw3j3T7LqErVkw

Very interesting read on ALL codecs, pros and cons but for me I've started testing the Lagarith codec which had a bit of bad press for slow speed BUT there is a new 64bit multi CPU enabled varient - which I honestly am finding to be amazing in quality and speed. Definately not as fast as cineform but as far as I can tell a lot faster than DNxHD given it is straight avi - no quicktime penalty here.

The reviewer has a shot at avid for screwing up what should be a great codec in DNxHD with poor support, shoddy implamentation and their choice to cripple it by going quicktime only.
