I see on Sorenson's site that they are now shipping Squeeze 5.0 which seems to include AC3 encoding (a feature missing in 4.5). I have Xpress Pro 5.7 and plan on making the MC upgrade, but I wondered if anyone could confirm what version of Squeeze is shipping with the MC upgrade now.
I read elsewhere that AXP users who upgrade to MC 2.8 qualify for a free upgrade to MC 3.0 when it ships, but I don't know if that upgrade would include current versions of the other software that ships with MC (like Squeeze) or just the new version of MC itself.
Since the upgrade from Squeeze 4.5 to 5.0 is $200 on it's own, its seems worthwhile to wait a little while if MC is still shipping with Squeeze 4.5 but may include 5.0 in the near future.
I would appreciate any information that anyone can provide on this issue.
The 2.8 upgrade did not include 5.0. Just the 2.8 version of MC.

The boxed upgrade as at last week still contained Sorenson 4.5
Solopost: The 2.8 upgrade did not include 5.0. Just the 2.8 version of MC.
It does include every 3rd party software including Boris CC and Sorenson Squeeze unless you want to save $100 and order the $395 download-only upgrade version which is a pretty stupid move if you ask me - if you think about the added value of these 3rd party applications it's a no-brainer...
Call up or email Sorenson Tech Support and tell them you just got the MC upgrade and it came with 4.5. Tell them you want the 5.0 and they will upgrade you, but you will have to ask, they aren't just going to send it out to unregistered users. I got 2 seats upgraded without problem. (and w/o charge)

Thanks for the advice Chris. I mail email Sorenson before a order the MC upgrade just to check, but the procdure you describe sounds perfect.
Hey all,
I tried emailing Tech support, which they gave me the avid upgrade link and said to 'purchase' that puppy. I even listed my serial number and said I bought it with my 2.8 MC upgrade - anyone esle having any luck?
Salud!
I also tried to upgrade, and they merely refered me to the $199 upgrade link. Gave them the true story, just got the MC 2.8, etc. No joy.

Same problem here. upgrade to Squeeze 5 from the version 4.5 for $199. I believe this is too steep of a jump from regular upgrade price of $79.00 to $199.
TMPGEnc Xpress 4 is just US$99.00 outright and IMHO beats Squeeze hands down, try it.

Just thought I would add my experience to this thread.
Emailed Sales at Sorenson, told them I had just bought MC2.8 which came bundled with Squeeze 4.5 and that i had heard they would give me a free up at grade to 5.0 if I asked.
Result very swift from a guy at Soenson (if you want his name I will PM it to you as I am reluctant to broadcast it incase it backfires on him) asked for thwe SN that applied to my 4.5 version and then within 24 hours a link to the download together with a new serial number all at no charge.
Hope that helps all those that want it, get it.
Hi there, I wrote to Sorenson and was offered a 25% off of the upgrade fee, no way they would give the software for free, is there anybody around here who can point me to the web page stating that Avid customers upgrading from AXP to MC are entitled to the free Sorenson upgrade? Moreover, the Squeeze interface is quite unfriendly and has got worst from version 3 to 4, I wonder if version 5 has improved, otherwise I would go for TMPGenc that seems to offer more option, better speed, and better quality output.
A nice week end to everybody across the community

I wanted to chime in on the confusion related to those who have upgraded to MC 2.8 and were told that Sorenson Media would provide a free upgrade path to Squeeze 5. First of all, my apologies if Sorenson Media was in any way the source of this confusion. I think there were a couple of scenarios that were unique and in the interest of supporting the customer, we may have given a free upgrade. While I wish we could do this for everyone, significant development & engineering resources were invested into Squeeze 5 which translates into costs and subsequently, the need to charge for the upgrade. We have, and will continue to offer free patches but the previous version of Squeeze had been out for roughly 18 months and Squeeze 5 offers significant enhancements so we felt $199 was a fair upgrade price. That being said, we have heard from many Avid users who thought the upgrade was free or should be significantly less. We want you to benefit from the new & improved codecs, improved workflow, and other enhancements so we’ve decided to put together a better upgrade price for Avid users wishing to upgrade Squeeze. Please visit: http://www.sorensonmedia.com/avid
Once logged into this section of our website you will be able to purchase upgrades to the new Squeeze 5 at a discounted price.
We hope that you’ll share this with other Avid users.
Since i'm at work and away from my serial number. The above link, is it same as %25 offerd earlier?
Thanks. Fred

IMO, Squeeze has an incredible interface. It is easy and requires the least mouse clicking. Many reviews of the software states the same. Of course how good a GUI is for you, is subjective. I just can't stand Compressor's, ProCoder and TMPEnc can be quite spartan.

and apart from the interface, the new codecs in Squeeze 5.0 are really good!
