Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

BLKDOG, sorry I ask again, but I need to be sure (english is not my native language): I ordered a powerbook with Avidxpress pro. Am I right that I need the upgrade to MC in order to let AVID work in Leopard? And if I don't upgrade, there is not a chance in a million years that with the current new powerbooks I can run AvidxpressPro in Leopard...? Right or wrong? Last time :)

Check the FAQ at the top of the forum sjon.

There will be no release of Xpress 'Pro that will be supported to run on Leopard.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

right. Leopard is not supported. Even though Leopard is unsupported you've indicated it's apparently functional for those on the bleeding edge.

I'm finally getting around to upgrading to Leopard with Win XP under BootCamp. I'm also making a bootable copy of my Tiger disk image (using SuperDuper to copy it to it's own partition on an external FW). I'm planning to edit in Win XP but I'm just curious if Sapphire works with Avid in Leopard.

    Yes, it does.

Have you tried to install on Leopard? 2.8 ran really well on 10.5.2 (not so much on anything before that). You might give that a go.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

    Ok, very quick question..?

Avid won´t provide their AXP customer with new upgrades anymore. Right?

There are a lot of us that just bought AXP and don´t want to upgrade to AMC. For me It doesn´t matter if it is cheap, I just bought XP because it´s all I need and Avid said and is still saying on their website that support for Leopard is planned for future realeses. Will I and everybodyelse that doesn´t wanna spend any more money to Avid, never be able to run XP on Leopard?

Is there any way, workarounds, that we can do to make AXP 5.8 work on Leopard? Or do I to stay on Tiger forever?

    / Joh3

There will not be a release for 'Pro that will support Leopard. 5.8 is the last release for the application.

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

I have the same problem, feels like I'm in an upgrade-hell. I have Avid Xpress Pro, which didn't have HDV support on my Powerbook G4 1,67 GHz. So I decided to sell off my PowerBook and get myself a brandnew MacBookPro 2,4 GHz instead. Now they say this stupid software won't run.

I've done a few test: Working on Avid in Bootcamp  is not realy an option: If I have 2 Monitors with different resolutions, t's a big problem because the app opens in one big window only.

Problem #2: I need a FAT32 formatted disc to capture which can be max 32 GB which is way too small.

#3: Opening old (Mac) export settings ends up in a full freeze.

#4: Editing DV Pal I want to see my image on a video screen. So I attach my camera through firewire and attach it to a monitor. Avid outputs the image but not the sound. The sound is only available through the built-in speakers of my MacBookPro. That is not tolerable at all.

So I'm running a second test: Avid Xpress Pro 5.8 on Leopard. Installation a bit buggy, some errors as reported by others, but finally running much more smoothly than in Bootcamp. Sound comes properly through firewire, but I have annoying errors coming up when I'm trying to edit my Keyboard shortcuts.

So I think I just continue with Leopard since in Bootcamp this software behaves too buggy

Actually you can make this work in Windows. Stretch the Application Window across to the other screen and Choose a "Toolset" (such as Source/Record) then position your windows where you want them and choose "Toolset > Save Current"

Problem #2: I need a FAT32 formatted disc to capture which can be max 32 GB which is way too small.

You can work in NTFS and get Paragon (http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/) for the Mac

Is this really true? (I'm genuinely asking - not being facetious) Is there no way to play PAL seqeunces back to DV tape?

That's true of course but still feel clumsy since I have a MacBookPro and a Monitor and they're different size, resolution and on different levels.

Looks like. I've checked all settings, did a reboot, checked all cables, still: Sound out only through built-in speakers.

So actually there seems to be no actual system running properly, even a Media Composer Upgrade is not out for Leopard.

It has been awhile but I seem to recall there was an issue of playing firewire through a DV device (camera, deck) but it worked if you were recording to tape. I think the solution to monitor both audio and video via a DV device was: insert a junk tape (tape you don't care about the contents, or a blank tape) and start recording. The signal would then pass both video and audio through the firewire to your client monitor.

Oh Gosh. I'm going to make myself sound like a fool. I've read like every post in here, and still can't quite figure out the solution to my problem, so please forgive me for probably asking a stupid question. (I'm a great editor, but a horrible techie, and i just returned from 5 months in Africa w/ no Avid)

My Powerbook is within days of it's death, but Apple no longer carries the part, and so is offering me a trade-in for a new MacBook Pro. I only got approval to make the trade a few hours ago, but I'm heading off to the Apple Store by noon today to make the trade, as I have a super urgent project that needs done.

The MacBook Pro will come with Leopard, and I currently own Avid XPress Pro 5.7.  I understand that Leopard is not officially supported, but will it still run? Do I need to upgrade to 5.8? Will the Apple Store help me downgrade to 10.4.11?

I hear all this talk about Saphire, partitionning, etc... and I'm totally lost. It's all going over my head, sadly. I'm used to the tech guys fixing this, but now I have to figure it out myself. Again, sorry for probably beating a dead horse by asking, I'm just very lost, and running out of time, as I need to go pick it up in like, 6 hours.

    Thanks for any help!

(crap. why can i edit a tv show seen by millions, but not figure software issues out?? well, i'm learning...)

Re: MAC OS X - Leopard

You may not be able to downgrade to 10.4.11 since Apple doesn't release retroactive drivers and the hardware in a new MacBook Pro may not have 10.4.11 drivers. I guess it wouldn't hurt to try.Worst case you'd have to reinstall Leopard. Hopefully you have a 10.4 installation disc. If not, you'd have to buy one. The Apple Store certainly will not help you downgrading to 10.4.11.
