How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

I understand how to create a 1080p/23.98 Project. But how do I get Sony HVR-V1 "1080i60/24p" HDV video ready for use in a 24p Project?

I know that the 2-3 pulldown must:
    * be removed during HDV capture, or
    * when HDV is converted to DnxHD, or
    * the 2-3 cadence must be correctly handled in the Timeline (whether editing native HDV or DnxHD).

    1) Can I request 2-3 pulldown removal during HDV capture?

    2) Will MC automatically look at the difference between the clip's 60i and the Project's 24p and then auto- sense the cadence and remove the pulldown?

    3) Can pulldown be removed when capturing HDV and converting it on-the-fly to DnxHD? (This is how EDIUS works.) If this is the way to do it, how do I request it -- or will MC automatically look at the difference between the clip's 60i and the Project's 24p and then auto-sense the cadence and remove the pulldown?

    3) If I can't remove pulldown during capture or conversion, I'll have "1080i60/24p" HDV or DnxHD clips in a Bin:

    a) if I drop them into a 1080p23.98 Timeline will MC automatically look at the difference between the clip's 60i and the timeline's 24p and then auto-sense the cadence and correctly handle the clip as 24p? (This is how Vegas works.)

    b) do I have to batch process the clips. How? (I use Cinema Tools to this for FCP.)

    Thank you!

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

And four years later, I am still looking for an answer.

I am using MC 5.5 and have an 1080p 23.98 project and one of my sources is an hdv tape that was shot with a Sony z7u at 1080 60i with 24-scan setting (pulldown of 24 over 60i).

I am looking for a time effect or a Timewarp setting to fix it after capture, or even a setting in the capture tool that lets me set the cadence.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    thanks, Darin

Capture material in a 1080i project. Open bin in your 1080p/23.976. When editing a motion adaptor will be added and the pulldown frames will be removed in the process.

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

    Michael,

thank you for the response.  I tried that and thought it would auto detect the cadence, but I am seeing a duplicated frame every 3rd frame.  Here's an example of what I see as I move through 12 frames of video:

    A-B-C-C-D-E-F-F-G-H-I-I

Is there anyway Avid can detect the cadence, or for me to manual change it?  It creates a slight strobe effect and the client thought I was adding some type of slow-motion effect.

    Thanks,

    Darin

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

hmmm... I was expecting it to do find the correct cadence as well. Is it a true 2:3 cadence with NORMAL or ADVANCED pulldown? What is the pattern when in the 1080i project? And does the A fall on a timecode ending in :00 or :05 (assuming NDF code)?

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

    Great questions.

    Here is what I know:

Sony HDV z7 menu setting for record was 24P SCAN (which records 60i) - was NOT 24A (advanced)

Cadence of 1080i project (2 fields per frame separated by line):    |AA|AB|BC|CC|DD|

    Camera was set to DF

    A field on 1080i 59.94 clip timecode ends with :18 - but each clip is different (:12, :11, :06)

In the Avid Help there is a listing for cadence settings in a Film 24P setting somewhere.  But since I can't find it I assume that isn't an option, or doesn't apply, to me working in HDV land.

I will do some further investigation.  Any answers you may have will be appreciated.

    Thanks, Darin

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

    Problem Resolved!

I recaptured some footage in 1080i project and brought it in to 24P project.  The automatic/default Motion Adapter applied a 125% speed adjustment using Blended Interpolated field type.  This time I watched it and there were no redundant frames which means the Avid auto adjustment works fine.  Not sure what I was seeing earlier. (side note - I did recently upgrade to MC 5.5 from 4.0)

    FOR BEST RESULTS:

When I brought in the 1080i 29.97 footage and Avid applied the default 125% Blended Interpolation Motion Adapter, I promoted that Adapter to Time Warp and set it to use "Both Fields" and changed my source from 'Interlaced' to "Film with 2:3 Pulldown" and let Avid Detect the pulldown.

I am much happier with these results.  Michael, thanks again for asking the right questions and steering me in the right direction.

The underlying issue that was confusing me was the YELLOW-GREEN vs. GREEN-GREEN quality setting.  As I don't have an external monitor, I was relying on my computer screen.  I didn't realize that the quality had been moved to Draft Quality (Yellow-Green) and that was affecting how I was seeing the de-interlacing.

    Thanks, Darin

Re: How to remove 2-3 pulldown from HD in MC 2.7?

The issue has been resolved.  My monitor quality had been moved to "draft quality" which meant I wasn't really seeing the pulldown removal properly.  Once I switched to Full Quality then the issue was resolved and Avid was properly detecting the cadance.

User error, but hopefully this lesson helps someone else with the same issue.
