Hello
I am trying to capture movies from my JVC camera which is connected to my PC via PCIe Firewire Card PCI-E X1 to IEEE 1394. I am using media composer first and I do not seem to find anywhere the capture menu (not under tools nor under windows in the menu) . In device manager I can see both the JVC device when connected and the firewire. my PC is win 10 .Any ideas why ?
Thanks
To capture from your JVC camera you need to upgrade to Media Composer or Media Composer | Ultimate.
You cannot capture from a FireWire device with Media Composer | First. It's one of the restrictions of the free application.
Here is a link to a page were you can compare all the different versions of Media Composer.
Avid Media Composer Comparison
Thanks a LOT for the correct answer :-) appreciate it.
After taking care of it (downloaded and installed Composer ultimate) and following the u-tube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6Fy8kw3cOA I tgried it and Although my connection between the camera JVC and the computer seems to look OK (I am able to control the camera from the application and play the video), I do not see anything on the Avid monitor
my AVID Composer version is the latest 2022.12
my settings are channel selection V A1 TC
video HOST 1394 audio HOST 1394
Res DV 25 411
Generic DVDvice-NTSC
and when I hit play I do not see anything
Any idea why ?
Appreciate your help
Hi Slipiner,
Glad that I already could help you so far.
It has been so long ago that I captured anything from a tape. What was a daily habit at the time has now become an extraordinary rarity. Oh boy!
So, I am not sure about this, but as far as I can remember it had something to do with the graphics card that you are not seeing the footage. Which graphics card are you using? Do you have the latest drivers installed?
Can you capture anything, even with not seeing the footage in the Avid screen?
Please put your system specifications into your profile (like mine below my post). That is easier for everyone to help you.
Ivan
many thanks.
my card is VIA 1394 OHCI Compliant Host
|The driver file version is 10.0.19041.1 (winBuild .160101.0800)
it is the latest and the best driver according to update windows.
There was no file created in my bin folder so I guess nothing happened
appreciate
Shimon
Hi Shimon,
The card you are mentioning is a FireWire, also called iLink or IEEE1394 card. I was refering to which graphics (display, VGA) card (adapter) you do have installed into your system? Well known and popular cards are from NVIDIA, AMD and Radeon.
Hi Ivan
My display adapter is NVIDIA GeForce 210. My apology :-(
Is there a way besides typing the system characteristics to display them like you suggested ?

1. Click on your user name.
2. Click on 'Edit my profile'
3. Click on the 'Profile Options' tab
4. Add your system specifications to the 'System Specs' section
5. Click 'Save'

Do you have the latest driver installed for your NVIDIA GeForce 210 display adapter?
Which version of Windows are you using?
What is the model number of the JVC camera you are trying to capture from? Can you control the camera with your current settings? By that I mean, can you see the footage playing in the viewfinder or on the LCD screen of the camera when you press play in the Avid?
Please follow Carl's (Camoscato) instructions to add the specifications of your system to your forum account.
When I opened the card properties and clicked on install the lastest driver software it prompts back I have the most updated one. I am using windows 10
Here are the system specifications I entered into my profile
Media Composer 2022.12 ultima, Desktop Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz", 16gb RAM, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, Imaging Device JVC GR-D34, NVIDIA GeForce 210, Generic PnP Monitor, Windows 10 Pro
I can control the camera from within the Composer and can see on the LCD screen of the camera when you press play in the Avid
Haven't heard from you guys. Is there any thought of how to resolve it ?
From my dim distant memory re the firewire card driver you have to specifically NOT use the default best driver. You have to select the old legacy driver manually.
