We've used Dnx36 for years.. Is anyone using some of the lower bandwidth options.. AVC long gop 6 12 etc quality wise they look good but any unintended consequences?
Thanks
It makes no sense to use long GOP for editing. You place extra burden on the processor when you cut on a non-iframe as it has to reconstruct information from earlier and later frames you aren't directly using -- every single cut on every layer.
For proxies, go with AVC-intra (all i-frame) or Avid's default DNXHR at lower resolution. (Or Pro Res Proxy, but there's no real advantage there over DNXHR.)
With each of these, every frame is complete in itself.
The reason really would be less bandwidth and while long gop would increase processor load it's really whether that's actually significant any longer given processor power or whether it's just true but of no practical importance?

Depends also on the effect pipeline. Some effects have a hard time with long-GOP media and if you build up a stack of effects you may find that DNx codecs play better than long-GOP.

Audio people hate long GOP like H264.
You can get inter hop sync issues.
True new computers are powerful but why waste processing capacity?

Never use long groups of pictures.
Intraframe like pro res or DNx is best.
I've always been told DNx works best for Avid.
It's not only about the bandwidth, but also how the codec works.
Is anything wrong iwth DNxHD LB in particular?
