    Up-rez/re-importing footage

    Hi Folks,

Well, its been literally years since I retired from editing, but my brother-in-law got married and I offered to do the video. So far, I've been able to work on a friend's MC 7.0 setup and everything imported without issue. Now, I need to up-rez to something like DNxHD 175 which should be enough resolution. The original is 4K at 24fps, converted to 1080p 30fps using Handbrake. The original clips are .mov so I had to convert them to MP4 for import.

I seem to remember (barely) a method whereby you created a copy of the final sequence, deleted the media and batch re-imported the clips at a higher resolution. Problem is I can't remember the exact steps to take to accomplish this task.

If anyone out there can help me out here, I would deeply appreciate it. Thanks so much, and my brother-in-law thanks you as well.

Why the framerate conversion? That is likely going to make this problematic.

Agreed the framerate conversion wi likely add in blended frames and depending where it was done foul up the relink.

It's normly not possible to re import or relink across a framerate change.

You would ideally do the whole edit at the native framerate and if needed framerate convert the final file.

And that conform process is different based on how the offline media is ingested. Imported or linked.

    Re: Up-rez/re-importing footage

Oh boy, I really am out of touch. Turns out, the camera "original" was 4K@24fps in .mov format. I used Handbrake to convert to smaller 1080p@24fps in MP4 format, for import into MC. Here's where I screwed up: I set the project setting to 1080p@30fps so thats where the frame rate conversion happened. Is there any way to re-import the footage into a correct 1080p@24fps project.

Then... I still have the problem of up-rezing the project to something like DNxHD175. Luckily, there are only thirty clips in a roughly 10 minute project, so not massive footage or anything. Should be reasonable to fix these problems, I hope.

Any help, greatly appreciated by all. Thank you.

30 clips in 10 mins? I'd just manually recut. Make sure you pick the right framerate, make very sure if the source files are 24.00fps or 23.976fps.

Great advice. You might want to add a timecode burn-in generator effect to the top track of your sequence and set the timecode setting to source timecode, then open the timecode tool and you will be able to manually conform accurately to the frame.

although if you really had to, you could make a new Avid project in the correct framerate, import bins from the incorrect project, then "relink" the offline clips to the online clips. You would then have an "online" sequence which you would be able to export.

    Re: Up-rez/re-importing footage

I like the "New Project" option. As mentioned, its been years, so if you could walk me through, step-by-step, on the "relink" part, I think I could make that work. Seems there should be a way to delete media from clips on timeline, then batch re-import them at a higher resolution? No?  Thanks to all for the help, really appreciate it.

    Re: Up-rez/re-importing footage

So when I create a new project at 1080p 24fps, import all the bins, and try to open the last sequence, I get the 'doesn't match project frame rate' message. How do I bring the 1080p 30fps sequence into the 1080p 24fps project?

Not sure if it's a media composer 7 thing, Truth be told I've never professionally used any version past 2019.

In the newer versions with the 'doesn't match project frame rate' dialogue box, I'm quite sure there is a button that says something like convert sequence into new framerate. You don't get that option?

    Re: Up-rez/re-importing footage

Well, the giant creaking horror movie doors in my head finally cranked open and memories flew out like a herd of bats. One was the memory of how to handle media creation, re-batch importing; in short, it all (mostly) came back. I found the right button to convert a copy of sequence to 24fps, which popped right into the new project timeline, and all media showed as offline. A semi-quick batch import and bang, there it was. 1080p 24fps, in all its glory. Looks good actually for having started life as cell phone video (4K 24fps on iphone 11). Anyway, thanks to all who responded, I do appreciate it. Be well.
