Hello there,
I'm looking for a new laptop for editing (mostly documentary, 4K ProRes max.) and I'm curious if there are any experiences with the new MacBook Pro 14' (16GB mem, 8-core CPU, 14-core GPU) with M1 Pro so far? It should be supported since the last update in December — is it really such an improvement?
Works well from other people's reports but 32GB memory is recomended. My M1 Max with 64GB cuts multi-cam with 20+ tracks (don't ask lol) like butter... something my z840 struggles to do.
I keep transcoding to dnxhr for 4K projects and get good performance on the m1max. Maybe ProRes would benefit from the chip but I doubt it.. Only annoyance so far on my set up with the M1 is losing support for BM ultrastudio for MC and having to use full screen playback and turn off dual copy engine to avoid crashing...
Nicov,
Where have you read about MC losing UltraStudio support with M1? I couldn't find any info about this.
The Avid Artist DNxID is supported and it is almost identical to the UltraStudio 4K mini.
I should have specified ultrastudio express, no support from blackmagic for M1, desktop video does not even show the device, so it's not specific to MC. Reading the support sheet on BM webpage ultrastudio 4K mini is supported on M1 with the latest desktop video driver but no support for MC at this point. Maybe when native M1 MC releases..
I just used BM monitor 3G on an M1max with MC 21.12 and I can confirm it works despite MC on apple silicon macs not making it to the supported list of app on the desktop video readme. So basically BM dropped support for TB2 devices like ultrastudio express or mini monitor for M1 macs but their TB3 devices do work..
Is the media engine (prores acceleration) working with MC? Any GPU usage? Media engine should be easy to check. Just transcode to PR and DNx, check CPU usage to see if there's any change.
trying to decide the right spec for a upgrade. Thanks a lot.
