External SSD Drive speed for Media Composer.

Is an external SSD hard drive with speed of up to 540 MB/s Data Transfer Rate fast enough to handle  4k projects on Media Composer

What's the datarate of you source files?

    The maths isn't that complex.

Don't assume you can max out the available datarate of the drive or you risk stutter.

I'd work on being under 500MB/s

So if your sources are 150MB/s you can probably manage 3 streams of video.

If you transcode to DNxHR HQX you could be looking at 80MB/sto 200MB/s

I've assumed you can actually get 540MB/s from the external drive as it depends on how its connected. Worth running a drive speed test to confirm sustained datarate read speeds.

Also working with 4k?UHD content is more than just drive speed. You need fast multicore processors. Lots of RAM. A powerful GPU card. ETC.

Re: External SSD Drive speed for Media Composer.

I personally have media drives with 250 MB/s for all my HD stuff and also some 4k.

For real 4k, which will be ProRes or DNxHR in my case, I have a 400-500 MB/s RAID.

My cache drive is a single 2 GB SSD with 430 MB/s which I'd like to be faster really. I also use this as a temporal final render target drive.

On my computer I have a  CPU  bottleneck, but it will be exchanged as soon as possible.
