    Alternatives to titler+ ?

I’ll  soon start a new session of  a TV program I have been working for for years. Until now we used an old version of MC including the legacy Title Tool. But the company we work in has upgraded the hardware and we have to deal with that. (Who could have believed I would so much regret the old, strange and slow Title tool ???).

I have tried to work with the Titler+, hoping that some practice could make it possible. But after many hours it seems that it is impossible to trust this program. Whatever you have done, it may suddenly be destroyed and you have to do it again. Reading posts on that forum let me think it is not (only) me but the software that is responsible for that.

Since I’ll have many titles to insert and need them to be precisely written the way we decide it, I’m wondering about the best way to do it, :

1/ Photoshop - Rather simple but we’ll have to switch continuously from MC to PS
    2/ After Effects
    3/ Resolve
    4/ Premiere
5/ Boris Title Studio - We may have the license but the interface seems to be uneasy (I’m not familiar with it)
6/ Persist with Titler+ - Is it possible to work with it ?
    7/ Wait until 2030 for a usable Titler++
    8/ Any other idea

I don’t need any sophisticated title, no 3D or light, just flat text and rolls. But it must be possible (and easy) to add or change text until the last minute. (And we need to edit on MC).

Which solution did you try ?

    Thanks for any help

Just to make sure, the old title tool is still available unless you are on a Catalina or later Mac OS.

You can find it in the legacy components download on this link:

    https://my.avid.com/esd/Product/Download/2386

If you're on a Catalina or later Mac OS and you can't use the legacy title tool, I'd go with Photoshop.

We're on Catalina, that's the problem. And for this job it is not an option to use another machine (like for example my old laptop I keep preciously on Mojave....)

Once you get used to Boris it's not that bad. There's a few tutorials from Boris on youtube which are helpful. If you just need basic titles and rollers I'd go with that for the best integration in to Avid, I remember being a bit confused by it to start with too. Hope your new hardware isn't based on M1 processors or you won't even be running MC let alone Title tool. Who could have possibly believed it would take three years to (not) fix this.  My entire production is running 2018.12.8 on Mojave and we have no intention of moving from it.

I just use the Titler + for now. I shouldn't have to pay for an (expensive) Adobe or Boris license to be able to create titles.

The titler + is "good enough" for me... as long as you render the titles after creating them :)

    Re: Alternatives to titler+ ?

If the project is HD, I'll usually still use the Title Tool, but I do understand this is not an option. After wasting too much time on the buggy, inconsistent Titler+, I use Photoshop/AE for projects larger/originating in UHD/4K. One advantage to Photoshop/AE is that both are rock and rock solid, and should you need to return to your gfx for future changes, etc., there will not be an issue. However, it is majorly inconvenient going between MC and the Adobe apps - but at least you are guaranteed of a dependable, repeatable outcome.

A while back I demoed the New Blue titler - lots of bells and whistles (more that I require), and it was a bit crash-happy, so have not pursued it since.

I agree I now teach creating titles if After Effects.

The Titler + is just too unstable and the various itterations (and I'm sure more itterations to come) makes compatability unpredicatable.

New Blue is just another 3rd party bolt on and I've had issues with it and and some point like Marquee it will be dropped.

So it legacy Title tool or After Effects.

Cannot believe that these are the only options. I have the same problem like Francois Labat since I updated my mac to Catalina. Try several things, but always go back to AE, which I have to purchase for a month. Isn't there really an easy internal solition for AVID MC or plug in to create simple titles? I am also willing to pay for this, although it was included within the MC.

But I heard that they the legacy TT will never be available for 64 bit, right?

I disagree with the titler + being too unstable to use for simple titles. I use this tool an awful lot. It's fine... and that's the problem. As far as I know, it is a tool that is being worked on as we speak.

Another possiblity would be some of the open source Photoshop "clones".  These almost all have a text component.  They are free.

To be accurate the legacy title tool won't be available on Mac 64 bit systems. My 64bit Windows 10 system happily runs the old title tool. It creates reliable simple titles without the issues Titler + introduces and I don't suffer long render times.

I just remote, supported an editor who's rolling credits kept gaining ghost key frames messing up the spped of the roller. Every time we fixed it the render for a 20 second roller took 15 minutes. And we had to re render a good few times to final get something working.

That's not a tool you can rely in on fast turnaround TV work.

Check out Natron: https://natrongithub.github.io/ It is completly free and has a useful text node. Great for tracking, roto and comps that is superior to the MC offerings. Once you get your head round node based work, stacking layers in MC will seem archaic.

BTW It even reads MC mxf media...

Yeah sorry - I ment the Title Tool won't be upgraded to 64 bit... not that It won't run on 64 bit systems.
