Maintaining Resize Information When Exporting AAF to Resolve

    Hi all,

In past projects utilizing a Media Composer to Resolve workflow, my AAFs would maintain Resize effects used in MC and translate appropriately to Resolve; however, the most recent project I'm working on does not translate the resize, forcing me to apply the effects again manually. I'm making sure to check "use sizing information" in Resolve - still no luck.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Resolve will only recognize 3D Warp efffects for Resize, not the classic Resize effects.  Resolve also does not recognize Frameflex effects.

Jef, might there be a list somewhere outlining all the effects resolve supports when doing an AAF?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes - the Resolve Reference Manual.  In fact, there is an excellant discription of the the entire roundtrip method in this document.  In the current v17 edition a chart showing supported effects is on page 945.

This document can be downloaded from the BlackMagic design support website.

EDIT: Sorry - really page 946.

Ah, thanks for the quick info! I'll go ahead and translate all of my resize into 3D Warp then. Thanks!

Re: Maintaining Resize Information When Exporting AAF to Resolve

Clarification: Resolve will recognize Frameflex effects, with one caveat--you need a keyframe.

In Avid, when you make Frameflex adjustments in the bin, the entire clip is affected and no keyframes are created; however, when you make Frameflex adjustments to the clip in the timeline, a keyframe is automatically created.

So, as a workaround to the Frameflex issue in the Resolve roundtrip, keyframes are the solution.

In my case, I created a hotkey to add a Frameflex keyframe to the first frame of the clip in Avid. In essense, this "commits" the Frameflex setting on the clip. Granted, you have to repeat the process for each affected clip, but the hotkey speeds up the process. Then, when you export the AAF, the Frameflex resize "sticks" and translates to Resolve. (Note: if using proxy media, be sure to execute this step before re-linking to source clips or the resize data will be lost in the re-link.)

It's not ideal, and it takes a little time, but it works in my circumstance, and sure beats trying to re-create the sizing in Resolve. A "Commit Frameflex" feature request?

Very interesting.  I will give this a try today.  Thank you for sharing.

    oklaroma:

So, as a workaround to the Frameflex issue in the Resolve roundtrip, keyframes are the solution.

So I am testing this and it is NOT working for me.  Avid 2021.6.0 to Resolve 17.3.1.

I am using SD footage into a HD sequence. Key frames added to clips in the sequence.  Once I am in Resolve, the clips are all postage stamps no matter what sizing / positioning I tried.

    Thoughts?

Re: Maintaining Resize Information When Exporting AAF to Resolve

Another quick test seems to show that it works with UHD source into an HD sequence.  I am going to keep fiddling with it.  I have come up with a convoluted workflow for getting SD sizing/position into an HD AAF for Resolve.  I will post it once I am a bit more confident.

But this whole mess underscores my long running complaints about FrameFlex.

Correct--my workflow is using UHD source material in an HD sequence. I have not experimented with SD, but I would like to hear your workflow.

Re: Maintaining Resize Information When Exporting AAF to Resolve

I did some tests sending Avid AAFs to Resolve (the first half of roundtripping) just to get my head around the difference for Resolve of receiving sizing information from FrameFlex versus a filter (3DWarp etc.)

I got a UHD clip and cut it into a HD Sequence (common formatting for me) multiple times. There was no Frameflex action in the source clp.

I then applied different resizing methods to obtain the same effect. Static, no moves.

    Here's what went across, successfully:

clip 1: Frameflex with one keyframe

clip 2: Frameflex with no keyframes

    clip 3: 3DWarp

    clip 4: Resize

clip 5: which was a HD clip with a Resize

What doesn't go across of course, is combinations - they become like Nested Effects, which are not supported. So using Frameflex + 3DWarp or Frameflex + Resize does not combine the sizing attributes into one for Resolve. In both these cases, the Frameflex numbers went through and the 3DWarp or Resize was excluded.

So, just to reiterate, RESIZE works for me.

Re: Maintaining Resize Information When Exporting AAF to Resolve

Neil - thank you so much for your experimentation! This corroborates my prior memory of having a Resize effect go over. I think I applied a FrameFlex to all my clips because I'm working a slightly odd UHD aspect ratio that's native to ARRI Mini cameras and I didn't want to set up a custom sequence size - when I get home, I'll remove the frameflex and try exporting again. Thanks so much!
