This is probably a very beginner question, but I am stuck with a lagging avid project I can’t seem to resolve and it’s driving me crazy. I have read on the forums, tried many suggestions, nothing has resolved this, yet. Does anyone have some guidance available?
Details:
Windows 10
Custom build PC
64 gb ram
Nvidia 760gtx
Sabertooth x79 motherboard
Cache and project on separate internal ssds
Media on 7200rpm hdds in tower
Internet is off
Not running any other programs.
The effects pallet in Avid is closed (some mentioned this as an issue, which does certainly make it worse when open)
My footage is all transcoded to 1920x1080 dnxhd hq
I begin/master in resolve and round trip with avid
The timeline is about 35 minutes.
There are MANY effects (which is perhaps causing it, but I can’t find the bottleneck in the activity monitor. The memory never goes above 60% nor the cpu about 15%. There is ample space on each drive, I’ve updated all programs, cleaned the cache, re-built the project from timeline up in case of corruption, etc.
But still, every time I play or pause there is a severe delay. Sometimes 2 seconds. Sometimes 20 seconds, sometimes it freezes and crashes.
I’m open to suggestions. Please and thank you.

Hello, Welcome to the forum.
Is this the only avid project where your having these issues? I'm trying to find out if this is a project issue, or a site (system) issue.
What CPU do you have, and what version of MC are you running?
Editing Movie Magic.
My Equipment & System Specs
Media Composer Ultimate 2022.7 | Pro Tools Studio 2022.7 | Avid Play | Sibelius Artist 2022.7
Sorry about that. Great questions. Intel i7-4930k @ 3.40 ghz
I don't have any other avid projects going on right now, but from what I recall from my last project, this was also an issue during fullscreen playback - so I'm guessing I have some setting wrong somewhere.

No worries! Could you give me your Avid MC version too, I'd like to check if it's a known bug/limitation with your specific footage (however unlikely that is)
And to confirm, this issue is only present when in full screen playback mode? How many monitors do you have, and what resolutions? Does this issue only occur when editing DNxHD HQ? Do you have GPU Acceleration enabled?
another important question: are all your video effects rendered on your timeline?
Here are some generic troubleshooting steps which would be relevant to this issue:
- I would try to create a new project with the same settings, framerate etc, then import your bins into that project. It could be a corrupted project
- I would then play around with the Avid media cache settings, increasing/decreasing the video cache.
- I would re-set my user settings, incase your user settings are corrupt.
Sorry for all the q's, but it'll help narrow things down.
Avid works well with crappy gpu's. But I think the Nvidia 760gtx is too crappy.
You should use a newer generation gpu and I'd say a 1050 ti as the very lowest model you should run (i speak from experience with this one).
I say a 1060 or 1070 would be playing it safter. I use a 1080 ti with no issues.
You'll still crash every now and then when switching apps while in full screen playback but im pretty sure thats and Avid bug.
My next gpu will most likeley be a flagship nvidia gaming gpu.. like a x080 ti or x090 ti... These higher gpu's are great when using resolve, premiere, adobe encoder, or streaming sessions with zoom or evercast.

Idk... I mean it should still work for him without crashing. MC isn't gpu accelerated very well.
I've cut features, and 40 cam green screen music videos on my GTX 1650 without any issues, it's not the best GPU ever, but it works.
I don't know what his framerate is. If it's a high framerate, that may be an issue. There are a million reasons as to why MC could be lagging.
Philip, We pretty much agree. I said I had good experience with 1050 ti (in my itx low profile build) and you did with your 1650.
But there is too low imo. Ive used one of those 3 digit pre 10xx cards and It was choppy for me.
Unfortunately, gpu prices are pretty inflated right now.
If i remember correctly with those old 3 digit cards, I don't think you have the option to choose between game driver or studio driver (you do with a 1050 ti). It shouldnt be a deal breaker, but it might be in terms of how outdated it is.

I see
i went in my basement to dig up the card that had choppy playback.. it was a gt 710.... thats much worse than what you have.
Before spending money you may want to install windows on a clean drive (no need to activate windows for this test), install motherboard chipset drivers, latest nvidia drivers, install media composer (run the trial), and set your windows power settings to high perfomrnace to see if youre still getting choppy playback. Thats really all you have to do to get media composer running smoothly, and it shouldnt be choppy. This test would take me less than 90mins since ive done it a million times.
Hi, did you find a solution? I have massive full screen lag on 2018.12. Up to five seconds before playback will start after hitting play. This laptop used to run it very smoothly on every other project before this.

essentially, fsp only lags after switching it on, but still it´s breaking the flow
