Everything was going fine with this project I have been working on for 2 years. Since this morning, every time I open one of my sequences, avid crashes without any error message.
I’ve upgraded from 2021.2 to 2021.3, and I’m having the same problem. I have tried unplugging all drives and media drives, same thing. Re-indexed media, duplicated sequence, deleted MC State, then created new projects to import and open it.
When I try to copy the sequence to a new bin, MC also crashes.
Changed/created new users. I have tried going back up to 7 days behind with another bin in the ATTIC. I have also tried “repairsequences” from console. I
No go, each time.
What else can I try?
Recenty I had the same problem.
The SearchData and/or WaveformCache was corrupt. After deleting these folders, everything was fine.
Succes!
Thanks. Deleting the cache didn't help either. I ended up clean intalling the computer, upgraded to Big Sur and everything is working fine now. Ouf...
I have been having the same kind of issue with sequence I've been building for a year. The crashing started before I upgraded to Big Sur and 2021.3 (in an attempt to solve it). Tried all the things you did, including dissecting the edit track by track- and it will sometimes open, seemingly more likely when I load a different sequence first and save. Very occasionally it will crash with the bin removed from the project, when just attempting to save after a restart of the program. But mostly when opening the most important bin of my project.
Once I get it loaded, I try not to shut down. Started a case, but have not gotten quick reponses when I'm available to investigate. Today, it's only crashed once.
You described the same problem and “solution” I found last week.
It seemed that the only thing working was opening other sequences (randomly), playing in Avid for a few minutes, and then I could open my problematic sequences again. I decided to go for a full clean install when I realized I could open these bins on other systems without any issue.
It’s a pain but now everything has been working fine for 2 days without any crash.
Hey JPBU,
Keep me updated here- I occasionally have had two or three day stretches without much problem. I did the complete install of Big Sur and Avid and it made no difference.
Will do.
Did you try opening the sequences on an other Media Composer system ? I've installed MC on my 2015 Mac Book Pro and I could open the sequences.. I guess as I slowly start re-installing plugins and 3rd party app I might encounter the bug again. So far so good, just "regular" crashes.
Yes, I had someone else open the sequence with no problem- though there are times when I've had no problem too.
My crash has morphed from sequence-related to just saving first thing in the morning.
I've moved on to a new edit in a new bin, leaving the old one closed, but I'm still getting a crash if I just start MC and begin working on this new sequence and hit 'save'. I've discovered that if I load a different sequence into the edit monitor, play it, then save, then I can reload the main sequence and continue working. Mystery, mystery, mystery.
I just want to chime in here and say that I've run into the same problem on 2 of my projects. In both projects 2 sequences are prone to crashing if you try to open them right after starting up Avid. Most of the time if I load a bunch of other sequences first (4 or 5) I can then finally load the problematic sequences. It is very weird and frustrating. This has happened on 2020.5, 2021.3, and 2021.5
I haven’t had any issue (well.. not that specific one at least) since I cleaned installed my machine. I’m running on an iMac Pro 2017. What computer are you running on?
I just went to the trouble of buying a new computer (any good excuse) and fresh install of OS and MC... still having the crashing on first attempt to save when opening... not sequence specific now, just saving. Avid support had me delete just about everything possible.
Like he said, after loading random clips it might eventually save correctly, or a restart will finally work. So frustrating. Yesterday, I created a new project and moved bins into it... started right up and I haven't quit out yet and will probably never.
I feel you...
I remember back in early 2000s, we would never shut down anything as long as it worked.

It sounds like a nightmare. Have you Exported the working timeline as an AAF link before shutting down (or crashing)?
It would provide an alternative to normal Bin Saving and at least you wouldn’t lose your work.
If one bit of media is corrupt, can you track it down by methodically removing clips from your working sequence until you return to a normal sequence-bin-saving/loading state?

It maybe worth playing around with the media cache settings. Try making the cache smaller and then larger.
I'm wondering if playing other sequences first is filling the cache and delaying the access to problematic media.

Also - regarding the media cache suggestion: When I do the trick of loading up a bunch of sequences first before opening the problem sequence, I don't actually have to play the sequences for Avid to allow me to open the problem sequence without crashing. I just have double click and open them.
