Currently there is no send to playback at 59.94P, so we have to file export to scan folder to get files to EVS for playout.

Advantage to this workflow was that we could use, for the first time in anger, ‘insert edit export’. This was great.

We had to fix our highlights show - 3 little paints in a 12 minute segment. Drop ins take seconds, rather than an 8 minute export. 

Caveats:

Insert edit export always defaults to export all tracks - you can modify in options to 'selected tracks' but beware:

a. clicking OK in this option menu goes straight to exporting

b. the 'selected' video tracks are exported as-is (i.e. select one video track and that is effectively soloed, tracks below are not output)

c. Exported audio appears to *only* be direct out (limited to number of tracks in file being inserted to). So my accidental audio insert to stereo master was just fx (timeline tracks 1&2) without the commentary (timeline track 3). This would be ok in 5.1/5.1.4 workflow as we’d have had to do a multiple mixdown->direct out export for original file.

d. You have to choose ‘selected tracks’ every time, it always defaults to all tracks

Feature requests:

More visual indication on what is going on with export (what tracks are going to be inserted, what audio configuration is being used).

Remove ‘use marks’ from options menu as it is redundant 

OK in options menu should   labelled ‘export’

Cancel in options menu shouldn’t cancel whole export

Setting to always export using selected tracks

Selected video shouldn’t solo, should be all tracks below

Should be an option to insert edit export as mono/stereo/direct etc

Should be an export option (also for straight file export) for audio to be exported ‘as monitored’

Media Composer will attempt to determine if the original export was done in direct out or by an audio mix, by comparing the tracks layout in the sequence to those in the existing file. So it must have assumed my file was direct out, even that it only had two audio tracks. Bug?

Points to more info on insert export ahead of performing the edit (eg track selection and audio output config). 

’Edit review’ would also be useful (link to file, play in to out with pre and post rolll, release file).

Until MC 2019.8 there was a bug with Insert Edit. If you had selected "mixdown to Stereo" with the first export of the sequence, Insert Edit only considered the first two tracks and misses all other tracks. This led to corrupted sequences.

With version 2019.9 this has been solved. Now Insert Edit mixes down all audio tracks to stereo if the first exported sequences was also a mixdown. By doing a mixdown first and then insert it into the existing export file, the result is a correct sequencee with just the part of the sequence replaced with new (correct) tracks.

Great post Trevor.  Not sure how this relates to your testing on 2019.9.0, but on my system on 2018.12.9 (Mac 10.14.1) file insert edit seems broken - period.

Just tried to do a very simple V only insert using the workflow that has worked for me before and it acts as if it worked.  I link to the file I modified.  Ok.  I drag the linked file into the source window and start to go to the area of the fix and Avid crashes.

If I view the file in a non Avid viewer, the fix did not happen.

This seems to happen consistently.

The up side of insert to edit not being fully functional yet is it still makes CineXtools a viable option.

It an extra cost but its the must go to for insert edits.

Especially if you need UK-DPP AS-11 inserts.

I know it sounds like some of you are having issues with this plug-in, but I'm hoping that there is somebody out there who has experience with this tool that can give me some input so I can decide if perhaps it might be worth it for us. I've used the full CinexTools before, so I have a bit of experience with their products (but not this one).

1) I know that in order for CinexTools to insert into a ProRes file it has to be a 'padded' file. When using this plug-in to insert into a ProRes file, does it have to re-wrap the entire file (as a 'padded' file) in order to make the insert? Or are you only able to insert into a ProRes file if it is already 'padded'?

One of the options listed is to 'insert captions'. Does this plug-in allow you to insert captions into a QT that didn't previously have captions in it? Or does the QT file need to already have captioning embedded for this function to be utilized? And does this have the ability to insert both 608 & 708 captions?

3) In that same video, when they go to 'AMA File Export', they choose 'Cinedeck Insert', but one of the other options listed there is 'Cinedeck MOV'. Is this just a standard export option that allows you to make things like padded ProRes MOVs and/or MOVs with captions embedded? Has anyone used this export function and can tell me what it is and what options it allows you to do?

I'm about to plough the lonely furrow of using this feature again. We are going to be exporting 50P XAVC OP1a masters using Avid MC 2021.x (unless send to playback works at 50P) and will no doubt want to do little inserts again. Resurrecting this thread to remind myself what worked last time... will add to it if it works / doesn't work!

I have been using it a bit the last few days.  Was on systems with 2021.12.4.  Did what it was supposed to do with a bit of drama.

First the system I was using got stupid several times during the day and I could not make spanned markers (pretty important for this feature) or get Audio inserts to work properly.  A full power off / repower was necessary to get things going.

Also, to get Audio to work, I had to fiddle with Mix tool so that I could insert new audio files on channels 1,2 and 7,8 of 8 channel file.  Not sure why, but eventually got it.

So it works, but you should really spend some time with it and take good notes.

I've had decent luck with Insert Edit Export if I set my marks around the section I want to export and enable ALL tracks. I also make sure that my In/Out marks don't split any audio or video transitions. I've had an audible "pop" when the insert happens during a cross fade.
