How to "consolidate" camera footage to exclude unused takes

    Hi,

there's a short film edited in MC (camera footage AMA linked and transcoded to DNxHD36) which soon goes to a coloring facility. They will get an AAF and the original camera files, but is there a way to give them only the files which are involved in the final timeline?

    Thanks.

Sure.  Relink your sequence  to your original sources,

then check the "Copy All Media" option in the AAF export dialogue.  Copy All Media - Will copy the entire master clip, even if only a small percent is used in a seq.

Be aware that depending on your original sources, in many cases it may be more efficient to send them everything.

OMG, it can't be that simple Big Smile (actually it looks like it can) I was thinking about much more complicated ways (which wouldn't work anyway) because I wanted to make the file transfer prior to the AAF export (and somehow remove the unnecessary files)

    Thanks :)

    Hi,

today was the day to try this and it doesn't work Sad AMA and 'AAF Copy All' seem to be incompatible - when there is AMA in the timeline the Copy All gives an error.

Actually I got a quite strict NO on the second attempt saying:

"AAF export involving ProRes media using any other method than "Link To" is not allowed!"

It was too nice to be true...

You are on the wrong track folks.

You don't want to include media in the AAF. All the media is proxy so no use to the grader.

You should export out a quide video and audio movie as a reference (ask the grader what they can handle)

For the source media you need to copy the final sequence to a fresh empty bin.

Then in the bin fast menu select then under bin display choose show reference clips

This will give a list of every clip usd in the final sequence.

Now ensure the source file and source apth columns are enabled and sort by source path

You now have a list of every source file used sorted by its location.

Maybe the question was not clear enough (though smrpix got it). I can put anything out of MC and I can also make long lists in bins with the clips used, that's fine. But the footage is 3TB and the coloring studio asked us to select and only copy those files that are actually involved in the final cut. So I tried to get those lists out of MC to the windows file system-level... with no luck.

What Pat said. Once You have the clips list exported as ALE You can write Your own batch file and copy all clips. Be aware that, depending on the camera, it might be impossible to relink to the clips in the target system if the entire file structure of the footage cards is not available.
