2018.11 Live trim through mask still not fixed

When trimming through a mask effect on a higher video track (monitoring), the frames do not update live.  Once you stop trimming, the frames update.  If you move the monitoring button to a track below the mask, trimming live updates behave as expected.  This long standing bug (more than a year) occurs in software only and hardware IO modes.  Occasionally, it will work, often just after starting the application.

I have also noticed that the problem still happens even if the upper mask video track is turned completely off... Just the fact that the effect layer is there, even if it is inactive, stops the live update.  Also if the effect clip is 'muted', the problem still persists.

In a related situation, if there is an unrendered effect on one of both of the clips that are being trimmed, for example a 'flop' (monitoring from that single video track), the effect will not play but reverts to the original clip without the effect.  However, in this instance the live update still works (but without the effect). If the effect has been previously rendered, the live trim woks as expected, unless you trim beyond the bounds of the render.

Trimming was always one of MC's best features and it's been messed up for a long time now.  Also the 'intelligent' gray trim rollers are rather dumb... They never trim where an editor would 'want' them to trim, but that's a whole other subject.

The good news is that 2018.11 seems to be very stable and responsive.  However, turning on waveforms still grinds the system to a halt if you have a full timeline with many tracks.

I am running 2018.11 and do not see that issue.

You do have "Render on the Fly" active in your trim settings, right?

Have you tried a new Avid user?

Yes, render on the fly is on.  I will try a new user setting but I made a new once quite recently to try to fix this. Let me try again.

New setting didn't fix it. Any other suggestions?

    A problem for me too.

Using AJA IO/XT. (and I think in software only mode too- though I'm not near my machine to confirm.)

Re: 2018.11 Live trim through mask still not fixed

I've given up using this method and now use mask margins. I set the mask i want in the format tab.

I have no mask on the source side of the composer window, and set the target mask on the edit side to mix to white, I can then see wha's in the mask area.

In the Videos setting tab I have black mask, this gives me a masked output on any BOB- Aja Nitris etc.

If I dont have a BOB i set target mask as black in the fullscreen playback setting window.

For exports, for speed I do a Qt without mask and then use handbrake to create MP4s with mask. (make sure all graphics are not in the masked area if you want them on the output!)

I don't have  'Video' in the settings list- 'Video Display' and Video Satellite', but no Video for settings that affect BOB output.  Can you elaborate?  Been a long-time request to have a mask on output.

    Thanks

Re: 2018.11 Live trim through mask still not fixed

At the moment I'm on 2018.3

and I have a video input & video output setting. Maybe because I'm using an AJA io4k BOB.

Interestingly if I power up avid without a BOB attached I don't get this setting.

I can check tomorrow with my Blackmagic BOB, but I currently dont have a nitris to check with.

Ah, I just needed to go to "Show All Settings" (Not just active) and there it is.  Wish it were a mappable command- I turn on and off the mask at times.  But thanks, that's handy to have.

Re: 2018.11 Live trim through mask still not fixed

I've been testing this out more today trying to find clues:

Creating brand new setting does not fix the problem.

Turning off, then turning on 'render on the fly' in trim mode does not solve the problem.

There is a difference in behaviour depending on the kind of trim you are doing...

If doing a left side trim (single roller on left), the mask appears to play but actually the image underneath 'remembers' where the edit was and actually plays the edit rather than the extension of the left side shot if you go past where the edit point was (before you entered trim mode).

With a double roller centre trim, the mask mask just dissappears as soon as you start playing the edit (in trim mode using JKL).

Wth a single roller to the right, the mask stays in place but the image does not play (stays on the edit point as it was).

In all cases, once you stop the JKL activity, the frames update and the mask displays.

Effects applied directly to a single video layer (and monitoring from that layer) also do not play during trim.

I also tried flushing the media cache and upping the video memory... All have no effect.

removing audio tracks has no effect.

Using a target mask is a good workaround but it involves a lot more mouse work than simply switching the monitor track in the timeline.

I'm not sure in what version this bug first started because I did a big leap forward about 12 months ago.  I know it didn't happen in 8.45 but it's been happening in every version for the last year at least.

    Dave

I consolidated the issue into one section and then all the clues that people have suggested and you have tried.  I then created a case and asked that a techie get looking at this to see if they can find a trend or something jumps out at them.  The Target mask workaround might be helpful for them to run this to ground.

Well, here we are over a year later, and this is still bugging me on 2018.12.1

I'm using an AJA ioXT bob, and I like to have the mask effect in the timeline since it's easier to turn on/off than going into settings and I need to see fullscreen with no mask on the source side.

Is this bothering any other people?  Marianna, is this case a cold case file?

    Still bothering me too!

It's been bugging me the last couple of years, but I never took the time to look into it. I just got used to toggling the mask off before trimming, which gets really annoying when you have to do it hundreds of times a day.

Today I spent a few hours investigating, which is how I stumbled upon this thread. Please Avid, fix this bug!

It's still the same in 2019.12.1.

I gave up trying with support... Just live with it. They don't understand editing.

    Dave, Joachim and Brian....

I have created 3 new cases and tied them all together.  Looks like different techs grabbed last time and didnt put 2 and 2 together. UGH....

    David - Case # 03973863

    Brian - Case # 03973867

    Joakim - Case # 03973872

I am adding myself to each case.......
