Has Marquee always been like this?

Ive just created 50 plus animated titles in Marquee and having waited while they all render off into a bin in Media composer, I was surprised to discover that the still need rendering on the time line; the title all have blue dots. I was under the impression that as rendered effects they should play in realtime in the source monitor. Am I deluded of has something changed? (I ont use Marquee that often, so may be it's me)

Re: Has Marquee always been like this?

Answering my own question; no it hasn't.  I've just seen one of Kevin P McAuliffe's old tutorials on CrativeCow. He designed an animated title featuring extruded text, lighting moving it in 3D space; rendered it off and then, back in MC, he was able to play the title in the source browser. So what would stop that working on my system?  My animated titles go to the timeline with a blue dot.

    Puzzled!

I did and it is. Going to check behaviour on my other systems today and report.

Not sure if this helps but until a few months ago, static Marquee titles were RT but animated ones were not, and showed a blue dot and needed rendering. Sometime in a 2018 release, I think, animated Marquee titles became RT. I'm on a Mac, however. Just tried one and it plays without rendering.

Interesting. I have three systems and I have now tested on all of them. My systems are called (imaginativley) Edit 1, Edit 2 and edit 3, reflecting the order in which I set them up. Edit 2 in a long-in-the-tooth system with a perpetual license for MC 7.6, the others are up-to-date.

On all of my systems animated Marquee titles come into MC as blue dot effects; so I assume this is as it has always been so and that I have simply mis-remembered things. I rarely use Marquee for still titles, let alone animated ones.

That doesnt explain how Kevin P. McAuliffe managed to demonstrate an animated title being previewed in the source monitor, but I cant make it happen that way.

Well, my system does now play them in the Source monitor and the Timeline, no rendering. It was a great surprise to discover this a few months back.

Well that's very curious and no mistake!  And which version of MC are you using?

Re: Has Marquee always been like this?

Animated Marquee titles always need rendering dont they (just like rolls/crawls)?  Static ones dont.  You got me wondering now!  You also cant keyframe them on the timeline.

As an aside i have jumped many Avid versions to current version yesterday - I note the Marquee version number is updated too.  Please tell me it does 4k now?!  Spent too long learning it to bin it!!!

    Ultimate 2022.12.1, Blackmagic Intensity Pro, WIN 11 on 7000Mbps M.2 SSD, Nvidia Quadro P4000, Asus Pro Art Z690 i9 12900k 5.0 GHz, 8TB M.2 SSD - its nippy!

Not any more, they don't. They show a green dot and play in RT. Nothing above 1920 HD, though. Your current option is the NewBlue Titler but Avid have announced a UHD Title Tool (not seen it, however and no date announced). I'd say that fior HD, it is worth learning Marquee but it can be a steep learning curve.
