Slowing down stock footage so that a frame is a frame

I'm sure its somewhere here, but I couldnt find it! I'm working in a 24 fr project, but have stock footage running at 29.97 fps. How do I import it so a frame is a frame- I dont want any frame blending. I'm not taking sound, so that issue doesnt exist.

    Many thanks

With the clip in your timeline and the track selected (playhead on clip), click on the Motion Effect Editor.

    Click the "Promote" Button.

Set the speed to 100% and the type to "Both Fields."

    That should do it!

If you link/transcode the clip, there is now a "Playback" tab under Source Settings.

And when you do Transcode the clip, Kevin, do you "Keep source's frame rate" or "Convert to project frame rate"?

If the clip is 29.97 and you are working 23.976, you would "Keep source's frame rate" (using a DNxHR resolution) and then adjust the Source Setting > Playback Rate on the transcoded clip to the Project Rate.

That would effectively play back a 29.97 clip about 20% slower.

Re: Slowing down stock footage so that a frame is a frame

    Kevin Klimek:

If the clip is 29.97 and you are working 23.976, you would "Convert to Project Frame Rate." That will change the frame rate from 29.97 to 23.976, effectively slowing your footage down 20%.

I'd enter the console command "IgnoreQTRate true" and old fashion import.

Except then you'd be using the legacy import method and would not have access to other link/AMA functionality.

Kevin, your responses say that the method should be: Link to the file and Transcode using the preference 'Convert to Project frame rate' but these two steps seem to conflict, as this procedure gives the warning "...you cannot batch capture, batch import, relink or link (via AMA) to these new clips."

Am I right in saying that this procedure comes at a cost?

You are correct...I mistyped above. I have corrected the post above.

    So, you would:

    - Link to the 29.97 clip in a 23.976 project
    - Transocde the clip - "Keep source's frame rate" selected
    - Go into transcoded clip's Source Settings and changle playback rate to Project Rate (23.976)

The nice part is you can select multiple clips and change the playback rates to all of them at the same time if you want, so it's very easy to deal with a number of clips this way.

Re: Slowing down stock footage so that a frame is a frame

Sorry Kevin, I do agree that that's the proper Avid way of dealing with mixed frame rates, but playback is not that pretty IMHO, it's far from being as good as the "interpret footage" AfterEffects command. As blasphemous as this may possibly sound I prefer the result of the ignoreQTrate workaround. Since this all is subjective, I believe the OP should run a couple of tests to make a decision.

There is no interpolation when you change the playback rate to the project's frame rate...it's one full frame for one full frame, just over a different duration (i.e., slower).

That's different than when you try and convert something from one frame rate to another, where there is interpolation involved to throw out frames or blend them together to keep the speed the same.
