Re: Is there an AVID lite?

    Jay Fedigan:

...Even though my boys have already had had a year of Photoshop in grade school and are now in middle school taking Photoshop classes for the second year, they are “too young” for the Adobe student rate so they can't continue to learn at home.  Maybe someone at AVID will take into consideration that today's kids are more proficient on computers at younger ages than ever before and that these policies are outdated and should at least include middle school students.

Very cool - when my kids were in high school they took photoshop and other related courses and that was quite some time ago. Makes sense that they are introduced to this stuff at an even younger age these days. Hopefully Avid will update their policies.

    Cheers

What remains to be seen with any lite product is wether or not codecs are included. As the initial usage would likely be from less than studio grade cameras, AMA type plugins could pose a problem. Also, it is unlikely that "certified" workstations would be employed, which could result in a poor experience.

I’m comfortable with Media Composer, I can teach them the basics and set up a pretty stripped down user profile for them to use.

Fully agree , youngsters of today are clever when it comes to manage computer applications , they´ll learn and will become very good at this.

    Jay Fedigan:

My preference for them is still Media Composer.  I looked into the Avid student subscription but it seems that my boys are too young to qualify.

Makes me surprised , didn´t even know that this was the case, Marianna ??

That will change come NAMM....  stay on the look out for some good news on that front peeps.

    I hope that I didn’t just whack a bee’s nest.

Whack away, dude. I didn't know 10 year olds were learning Photoshop in school, and maybe this will stir up someone at Avid to make a change to their educational license policies.

Happening.... wait for some scoop around NAMM....  I think you will be happy.

Re: Is there an AVID lite?

I was advising a high school class about 5 years ago and we decided on Avid Pinnacle Studio Ultimate (I think it was 15 at the time).  Check it out sometime.  I think Corel now has Pinnacle Studio 20.  It was intuitive and the kids picked it up quickly.  They came up with some really nice looking productions.

    Jay Fedigan:

My 10 year old twins are very interested in making videos.  They've been doing some shooting and I've edited a few for them on my Avid.  But thier videos take a back seat to the work do for my clients so they want to start editing themselves. I've just upgraded and am giving them my old HP z400.   Is there a lite version of Avid for beginners or a program like imovie for the PC that won't break the bank??
