Questions re Upgrade from MC 6 to 8

    Hi beloved forum,

I'm about to move up from MC 6. to MC 8 (software only, no dongle). Exciting, but also scary. Just a few questions: can I still capture analog media (VHS, BETA etc) as one always could via capture tool (I heard people saying there's some difficulties now)? And what's the story with BCC, are there any Boris effects included? Or does MC recognize my old ones from the 5.0 bundle? I've got a Firewire Raid, is there a cheap/easy option to turn the thunderbolt or USB 3 ports into firewire so I'm not losing too much speed?

    thanks so much guys!

Yes, you can still capture if you have supported hardware - just like before.  Supported Avid-branded hardware works, but also AJA, Blackmagic, and a few others (though Matrox seems to have stopped working after MC 8.6.1).

No Boris included - must purchase separately.

You should be able to use a Thunderbolt-to-FireWire adapter.

I will add, though, that BCC 8 does seem to still work with the latest MC versions, at least as far as macOS 10.11.

(BCC 8 was the last version provided by Avid with certain bundles.)

Which MC version?  Mine crashes on launch on anything after MC 8.6.1.  I got a Blackmagic Ultrastudio device as a result.

Re: Questions re Upgrade from MC 6 to 8

    Thanks heaps guys!

I got firewire/thunderbold adapter sorted. check. I've got a BM Intensity Extreme, it did a reasonable job so far, so I'm assuming it'll still do the capture job. check.

What I can't figure is if the BCC from my 5.0 bundle will disappear after installing 8.0 or if it's still gonna be there. But I guess I'll have to just do it to find out and if not pick up another $600 for the updrade BCC version. Which kinda sucks.

    Cheers

As far as I remember your BCC bundle was 32 bit and did not work when MC went 64 bit.

These days you can buy smaller bundles of BCC (a Restoration pack for example) at around $199US. Collectively all the bundles are much more expensive that the full version but I find that I only use the plug ins in the Restoration bundle these days.
