Hi Avid Community,

I was wondering if I can get some feedback on how their Nvidia GTX1080 series video card vs. a Quadro card has been running on their Avid workstation... 

Does it require any special adjustments / software tweeks to get it to run properly within Avid MC?

I have been using it and so far it has worked flawlessly.  I see we have the same system.  I did have to get a power adpater as the GTX requires an 8 wire power connecter which was a few bucks at Frys.  The performance in Resolve is great too.

Which power cable did you specifically purchase?  Can you send me a link?
Also, how many hdd do you have running inside your computer?  I guess I'll have to pull one out to account for the draw on power...

So I'm up and running with my new video card.  Thanks again for the cable information.  Have a new issue now...  Avid and Adobe is saying that the CUDA is unsupported.  I've installed the latest drivers from Nvidia... that didn't solve it. 

How did you solve the issue?

What are you doing to detemine that CUDA is unsupported with Avid?  Are you getting an error message during startup? 

What Adobe product/version are you referring to?  Is that an error message during startup also?

I'm not getting any error messages with Avid during startup.  What bios version is your Z420 on?  I updated mine to the latest just a few days ago and it was a fairly recent update.

Are you on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit?  I am on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. Not sure if that makes a difference.

There are certain bios settings that are documented for the Z420 that you need to make as well.  Check them out.

Ok, so my bios is up-to-date.  Didn't solve the problem.  I'm running Windows 7 Pro.

Adobe AE says (under the GPU information [preview preference] Device 1 (GeForce GTX 1080)(unsupported).  I did a comp test render and nothing has changed in terms of how fast it gets through the comp compared to my old video card.  Same with Adobe Encoder... no change in render time even though the CUDA option is selected.

Avid MC gave me a message when I first installed the video card and load the program.  It says it CUDA was unsupported... I should have written the exact error message down... I can't get it to come up again.  The video card works, but the CUDA is not fully working because I do not see a difference in render times or general speed.

I guess my last resort it to buy and install windows 10.  I'm not a big fan of upgrading unless I really have to.  It'll take me a day to get all the apps and plugins installed... I don't really want to do it unless I really have to.

Any other thoughts?

Just and FYI.  AE does not really use Cuda much at all.  Just certain situations.

AME uses it a bit more, but again just certain situations.

You might want to install the CUDA development software which has the ability to test you CUDA installation.

So I downloaded the nvidia CUDA drivers and this is the message I got when I bagan the installation:

"This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.  You may continue installation, but you may not be a ble to run CUDA applications with this driver.  This may occur with graphics hardware that is newer than this toolkit.  In that case, it is suggested that you keep your existing driver and install the remaining portions of the CUDA toolkit."

Did you get this message when you installed these drivers?

Ok, so I finally was able to get everything up and running... what a nightmare!

It's really simple actually... once you know what's up. :) You have to add the video card to the following config files:

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC 2015\Support Files
raytracer_supported_cards

Then go into the preferences and make sure the CUDA option is selected in the preview and the project settings.  Bingo!
