Hi, this might be an easy answer, but I couldn't find this specific question on the FAQs.
We are updating some PCs and were going to use a spare Avid dongle (for which we have a support plan) to use 8.5.3 on an recently updated PC. The processor is a bit old though (HP XW8400 - dual Xeons) so apparently 8.5.3 won't work, we might have to use 8.2 or lower.
My question is: Can I use a dongle updated to 8.5.3 for this? Or is there a way to get a dongle updater for older versions of MC on our account? The dongle is not yet updated - I think it's still on MC 5ish, so should I go ahead with updating it?
Thanks in advance

The short answer is yes MC 8 Dongle license is compatible with all MC8x version and also backward compatible to lower version FAQ here.

Ralph
Hi Ralph,
Thanks, good to know. There is a bit of a problem still - when I try to update the dongle in app manager it says it isn't compatible with this version. I assume this is because the dongle is going straight from an older version of Avid, which it has been running for a while (around MC3 I think) straight up to 8.5.
I should probably post another question for this, but as you replied thought you might know the answer to this too!
Cheers

Did you obtain an .avd updater file? Use the most updated AppMan.
Yes, have an .avd file, but the app manager is the one that installed with the Avid version (8.2). However it won't sync so I can update it (it's just hanging) and the usual procedure of signing out, closing it and signing back in won't work as there is no sign-out button. I've also followed these instructions to get it to reset:
On Windows please:
• Quit App Manager via right+click on tray icon, selecting Quit
• Open Task Manager, Processes and also stop the "AppManagerHelper" process
• Go to: C:\ProgramData\Avid\AppManager
• Delete the "Cache" and "Db" folders
....but to no avail, after restarting the PC and the app man, it still just goes straight to 'syncing' and hangs for ever.
Aargh, etc.

IIRC that is a bug in the previous AppMan, here is the link for the latest AppMan.
Aha, thanks Ralph, I thought you had to use to AppMan to download the latest AppMan, so was caught in a logical loop.

Actually, your thought is right, you have the option to update the AppMan via the AppMan, it's the sync process that got in the way.
Hi Ralph, thanks for the help. Unfortunately, using the latest AppMan doesn't work either, when updating it states 'no dongle compatible with this update file found'.
I think it just must be that the dongle is quite old (it's the purple 'Rainbow Super-Pro' type) and has missed quite a few updates so it can't leap straight to the latest updater. I might start a ticket and see if Avid can supply an interrim updater, or firmware flash or something.
I suppose we could do the online activation as a last resort, but the dongles are more useful for us so hopefully it can be sorted.
Cheers for the advice anyway.
Dan
pm me the case number just in case, I will do a follow-up
Thanks,
Sorry for not replying, I didn't get the email alert - anyway, Avid customer service sorted it out it 5 mins by sending a new dongle updater file, so all is good now.
