I'm having a relinking situation....I was given a sequence that needs to be relinked to high res media.  In the offline cut, the editor imported the media as dnx36. So I should have an easy time relinking and importing as high res dnx175 media. But I can't get it to work easily.  The sequence is 5 mins long but the sources are hours long.  I decomposed the sequence in hope to consolidate the offline to have a few frame handles.  When I look at the new sequence, all of the clips still have their original full length media.  

When I go to batch import, I see all of the master QuickTime media on the drive but Avid imports the entire clip instead of just the smaller sections that are in the sequence.  I know I'm missing something obvious, can anyone help?  Also, when the original editor imported the media as dnx36, he did not add reel numbers.  Can I AMA link to the sequence then consolidate/transcode?  

I'm working in Avid 8.1 on  late 2013 MacPro on Yosemite. 

Unfortunately, this is the way the legacy Import method works.

Which is why linking via AMA and transcoding is the way to go.  When you uprez, only the parts used (plus handles) gets re-imported.

I don't think there is any other workaround with your imported clips other than importing them at high rez.

There is a chocie at ingest. use Import (legacy method) or Link (formerly AMA link) the former forces you to re-import the whole of the original source at finishing quality. The latter allows relinking back and Transcode of just the wanted media.

Reel numbers aren't needed for imported clips as MC knows the file name and location. Even with AMA it's not needed.

Or start in another application such as Resolve and roundtrip via AAFs:-)

Perchance, in the Avid Bin do the master clips have metadata populated in the "Source File" column? If so... and the "FPS" and "Start" are a match then...

I love testing Avid features and a big feature I love to test is different ingest paths, maybe this can help the reconform.

Looking for consistencies for following typical offline editorial sequences to typical online finishing creating deliverables. A start for the computer is to have metadata linked to video essence.



In the Relink Command Window to use "Source File" bin column metadata for the master clip identifier, the Artist selects the second option "Tape Name or Source File Name".

File types like QuickTime Movies for example: AMA Plug-in Master Clips and File Menu > Import Master Clips might have the same matching "Source File" column name metadata populated. Media Composer can use the same naming convention assigning the exact same "Source File" metadata for a lot of video codec wrapper combos upon ingest.

scenario: relink command using populated metadata in the source file bin column when the original master clip in the sequence was file menu > import ingest path and now the artist would like to reconform using AMA plugin master clips

Step 01: Before using the relink command, I clear the media objects. Please click the the Clear Bin Memory button.
The Clear Bin Memory button is found in the Project Window > Info Tab



Step 02: In the Avid Bin select the AMA Plugin Master Clips at the same time as the sequence.


Step 03: Go to the Clip menu and choose Relink. The Relink Command Window appears


Step 04: In the Relink Command Window, Activate the following
Relink selected items to: "Selected Items in ALL open bins" and "Allow relinking to offline items".
Relink by: 
Original
Timecode: "Start"
Source Name: "Tape Name or Source File Name" (second one down in the list)
Tracks to relink: Video







For this type of reconform, the stipulations for a sequence to relink to selected master clips is to have master clips with a metadata match of "FPS", "Source File", and non-rolled over "Start" Timecode. And duration for the portion needed for the segment in the sequence.

A metadata relinking feature for artists who would like any type of ingest metadata path reconform control.





I love to go a step further with matching "FPS", "LINK" and "Auxiliary TC2" for a relink to support roll-over timecode and other variables that can come up when using a relink command selecting a sequence with master clips.


-When the Avid user has master clips with "Source File" columnn metadata populated, those master clips are using "Source File Mobs". Mobs means media objects. Currently, in the Avid bin for display, those master clips are either Tape Mobs or Source File Mobs.

That would be the missing link, Scott.  At this point it looks like the OP is better off with realllllly long clips rather than trying to ascertain the missing source file names.
