Still Pumping Out Video on MC 5.5.5x with Adrenaline HD :)

    My Fellow Editors:

Well, I'm still drinking the odd coffee, and I'm still editing away and turning out projects with my old MC 32 bit 5.5.5x and my trusty old, huge, heavy, ugly, Adrenaline HD Yes I've been checking out the other editing solutions out there, and MC is really being left in the dust ! Wow ! I feel like a grandfather clunking away on my trusty old MC editor, but why upograde, since it's doing everything we need here ? Still editing tons of HDV, still complaining MC doesn't properly support HDV 23.976p with source time code if you're capturing with VTR or directly from XL H1 camcorder ! (You have to crash record !) For us this is our only pet peve, but we bought a brand new-old stock in the box Firestore FSC off ebay, which allows us to capture HDV in native 23.976 with the souce camera TC. You can even capture off the XL H1 in a bizarre flavor of Quicktime, but MC will not support it unless you buy a 3rd party pluggin. I was too cheap to go buy it, instead I just set the FSC to record in native HDV and I can import those files directly into MC without the need of the pluggin. Does anybody remember the name of that 3rd party pluggin to read the Firestore's special flavout of QT ??

I see I'm editing off in my own little custom world, and from what I've seen from the latest iterations of Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas, so is Avid MC Wink Any reason to upgrade yet ? Is Avid still manufacturing super expensive alternatives to the old, huge adrenaline ? I haven't bothered checking lately. Maybe I will go buy that el-cheapo 3rd party Matrox external box solution ? Huh? The matrox stuff looked pretty darn good, and its was way cheaper ! Yes I like cheap ! I'm cheap ! I like to keep my money in my bank account. I should go pick up Final Cut X for my 2009 24 inch iMAC. I still have render cut studio 7.0.3 -Hardly ever use it.  Sleep Yes I still transcode and render some stuff. Right now it's a Sorensen Squeeze 8.1 720p WMV to QT 1920 x 1080. REmember when we all thought WMV would be the web browser video standard ? Still, Microsofts Blu-ray version of the codec looks pretty darn amazing (VC-1) and we still use it on some of our Blu-ray authoring sessions. Well, I know how well the HDV compatibility went, so how's the XAVC-s codec compatibility going ? Wink Just pondering while I'm rendering

Upgraded Once again after 2011 laptop died with MacBook Pro 16 inch 2020 laptop with Intel Core i9 8 Core 2.3 GHZ CPU, AMD Radeon 5600M with 8GB of HBM2... [view my complete system specs]

The thing is don't peak too early in life.

A question is, once the dust settles will AVID have caught up? Dust settling being "future feature requests" making their way into MC. As AVID plays catch up the other NLE's are not sitting idle! It would be interesting to see a comparison on FCPX, MC, Edius, Premiere and Resolve on paper. Are there just one or two items that make a particular NLE "the" app of choice? If MC had an engine using 8 cylinders and the plugs with the currect gaps, would it be looked upon differently?

I would add fixing bugs--current & those intrduced in the catching up. Also, will catching up be merely catching up to or moving ahead of the competition?

Lets' just say one of these need a serious engine tune up! Embarrassed

Re: Still Pumping Out Video on MC 5.5.5x with Adrenaline HD :)

It's been a while since I posted 'Avid opinionated' posts in the forum. But as things have evolved since MC 5.5.5... here goes.

I agree that MC 5.5.5 on a HP Z400 with an SSD for the OS and enough memory is still of a different performance level then all the 64 bit versions introduced since then. But thanks to HP, Intel and other brands the increased hardware performance of the Z420/Z440/Z820/Z840 has (to an extend) masked the higher requirements of MC 6.0.x through 8.4. Still... Especially the UI and transcoding have suffered over the years. And one of the obvious problems was and remains quicktime.

That said MC 8.4 is functionally finally bringing the oh so requested functionalities to the table. It is going in the right direction IMHO although I still see a few mayor issues that need change which have been discussed many times in these forums. On top of my list are quicktime and the quality of the AMA (now just called link) media management or better the lack of it both in MC/NC Symph but also in Interplay.

So if you ask me the buggy-formula1 comparison is not really appropriate anymore... Maybe change it into a Citroen 2CV or a Zastava YugoWink. Just my 0,02$.

There are a coupe of things I have heard about the internet. 1. You can find almost anything on it 2. Don't believe everything you see/read on it. I have read about the "power of suggestion" and theoretically the use of these cars will improve the Avid Engine! Smile The website in question stated all I had to do was over time increase the speed of each "Avidmobile", send them 10 box tops from any cereal and a cashiers check of $500.00. Wish me luck! Big Smile

Very respectable. This is far from the Soap Box Derby! Avid, You are almost up to speed. Soon we can say Ladies and Gentlemen start your engines.

For all those keeping score "AVID" was on the first three cars. You don't put "AVID" on a Lamborghini! Big Smile Also, the first two cars are the equivelant of MC 6. The first 64bit and the ability to improve the app. The second two cars are equivelant to MC 7. The last few cars will represent MC8. The need to see FCPX, Premiere, Resolve and Edius in the rear view mirror!

An interesting collection of images Geeked

    One big flaw!

The lower car in each set of images remains unchanged.

I don't know what fantasy world you live in, but the car in the lower picture has been developing all the time.

When Avid "catches up", it will only have caught up with the dust left by the others as they speed ahead. Yes

I live in the fantasy world of "knowing the objective" of my posts! Geeked Pertaining to engine speeds, Avid currently has the inability to smoothly play specific files.  Either through CUDA or other means FCPX, Premiere, Resolve and Edius has solved this issue. AVID's engine needs a major "tune up" to play "all" files smootly without needing external hardware or RAID. When this happens all speed differences will be irrelevant. Either your app can play all files smoothly or it can't! So the last "AVIDmobile" will be the same F1.

Inspired by follow forum contributers' procrastinations, I peeked at some F1 performace data (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_One_car). No street car will catch-up to let alone surpass a F1 car on a perfectly smooth dry controlled access surface. Doing so will require an equally specialized Team Avid top fuel dragster or Bonneville car. On the other hand, Team Adobe's F1 car won't be going anywhere far or fast on the potholed & patched country roads 'round these parts.

Seems like a lot of people here are trying to edit with cars.

I have found that, in the real world, NLEs are much better at editing than cars. Geeked
