So here goes. I've heard that the CC field is full of mines and I'm adding ammo to the mix by introducing the following. A broadcaster still requires tape for long format HD programs when it comes to paid programming we produce in house. I have successfully created a tape using an AAF file provided by a CC vendor and laid it on my mixed down 29.97 sequence, (from a 1920 23.98 fps Project)...that's another story.
I notice and theorize that as long as that data track is present it will transfer to the tape, which I have already successfully done, even though I cannot activate that track in the timeline. It will give me an INFO pop up, (not error message) that says, CANNOT MONITOR DUE TO THE FOLLOWING: Format 720p/29.97 or whatever the falvor of the month HD size is
To add to the dilema, I cannot verify that CC is present until the broadcaster QCs the tape. So I end up biting my fingernails til then.
So, my question to you folks is are we doing it right? I will not be able to really 'activate' that track (like a normal track if I wanted to see titles or secondary video tracks, etc.) Because that's the way it seems to work from my one and only experience with data tracks in Media Composer. Thanks for your input as always. These forums rock!
If you can print to tape with the captions, you can get a VANC monitor from EEG to insert into the HD-SDI path. That will provide an OSD that will tell you what caption services are present and decode either the 608 or 708 as you choose. It will also alert you to VChip data and AFD data. We use one in our QC station. Works great.

Not sure if this will help you but...
We use our rasterizer scopes to check HD CC. I think Terranex supports HD CC to SD CC (708 vs 608).
