HI everyone,

I´m looking for a client monitor. First i thought about the sony LMD-2110W but now im thinking about the new NEC MultiSync EA244UHD. Has someone any experience with this 4K (3840 x 2160) monitor?

At the moment i just have a mini matrox output. So no chance for 4K output, but the mojito will be the next step. I am currently working with Mediacomposer 7. Is it possible to get 4K out of my Avid Version?

The biggest problem is that i have no chance to get a view on the NEC EA244UHD. No shop has it in store. I just can get it on the internet.

So i would be very happy if someone has ever seen this monitor. Or if someone has opinion to this. Maybe its a bad idea, to use this as a client monitor.

Higher than HD resolution is not supported in MC 7, forthcoming releases will support UHD.

While I do not have experience with the exact model of display that you are looking into you should consider the following.

Video modes supported by the display and modes that you will need to monitor from your Avid. Many displays do not support wide frequencies such as 23.976, 24fps, or they may need the signal to be interlaced/progressive in order to view.

Do you need SDI, or is HDMI adequate?

Colour spaces supported by the display. Do you work only in Rec709, or need P3, or Rec2020.

All the above are things to consider before investing.

Bluefish444 are currently adding the higher than HD support to our Open IO plugin for mediacomposer versions which are forthcoming. We do have an SDI or HDMI solution for all workflows from RGB 12bit to YUV8/10bit.

I haven’t found any informations about the frame rates this monitor can play. And now im a bit uncertain. Because that would be the worst. If i buy this TFT and i got problems with the frame rates.
Normaly i just use 25p and 24p but who knows whats next, 1080i is not impossible. Or is this more a problem for my I/O box?

HDMI is OK for now. But when im ready for 4K i thought about using the DisplayPort.

I have only worked in Rec709 yet, but i heard some rumors that Rec2020 will be the new standard for 4K and the future.
I also haven´t found any informations about the colorspace Rec709 and Rec2020, just know that the monitor can sRGB and AdobeRGB.

I don’t do any professional Colorgrading, thats not my business and im not really competent to that. That a job for another profi. I just do a quick preview for my clients.

Yes it is worth confirming the frequencies supported by the display you are interested in.

I have not seen any Open IO devices with Display Port as an output only SDI/HDMI/DVI as yet.

If you are interested Bluefish444 can provide SDI and HDMI output from Media Composer and we will be supporting Higher than HD workflows with the addition of these features in AVID.

As previously mentioned, the problem with monitors that are purely designed to work with computer graphic cards (which, on a quick inspection of the specs, the NEC seems to be) is that they are designed to only work at very specific frequencies and expect progressive RGB to be fed to it's inputs. They also have pixel dimensions that are not exactly that of HD or 2k/4k, so they tend to scale up/down to achieve a full screen display. Finally the colourspace options tend to be full gamut or sRGB. Depending on what device you are intending to feed your monitor with, you may, or may not, be able to view the Avid output successfully at the various resolutions/interlacing/colourspace that you might be working in.

I know that this is intended to be a client monitor, so you don't really want to be spending thousands of dollars on an expensive broadcast monitor, but my experience of clients is that they'll be unhappy if their monitor looks vastly different to your monitor screen. My advice would be to have a look at the new HP dreamcolor range. the 27" display will handle almost all of the frequences and formats you're likely to throw at it and although not a full size 4K monitor, it can display a portion of the 4K image in 1:1 mapping. Also it can display progressive or interlaced outputs and most importantly, you can apply all of the common colourspaces in use. It also has built-in colour calibration, so with the appropriate measuring probe you'll be able to get the image to be approaching that of a full broadcast display monitor.

It's a bit more axpensive than the NEC (around 1500 US dollars) but it'll save you a lot of heartache in the long run!

I have the Sony 2110W fed through the AJA ioExpress, looks great and very accurate. Displaying 24P is swwet.
