Here’s an interesting issue with op1a xdcam file formats with closed captioning:
Broadcasters have encountered satellite “flipping problems” with the CC- wrapped op1a files generated directly out of Avid. The file doesn’t play and hangs up. Interestingly, if you strip the CC file from the Avid op1a in Mac Caption Pro, you can re-attach it to another copy of the same file generated op1a out of the Avid but WITHOUT CC and reassemble it in Mac Caption Pro. What’s odd is you don’t need to convert the CC to anything different. Just put it back on the clean op1a, and the file plays without a hiccup. Draw your own conclusions.
I’m using Avid / Mac version 7.0.4
Something must have changed. We have been using MacCaption to create the AAF files for the captions and inserting with MC 5.5 then exporting to XDCamHD MXF Op1a with no issues at all. I haven't tried with our recently upgraded 7.0.4 systems. bu tthen, we have another tool recently in house to insert the captions so the editors don't have to.
Our AVID's are all on Windows 7.
Does this issue happen all the time, or intermittently?
Doubt that Avid changed anything. Might be an issue specific to the flipping software being used at CBS. The issue is consistant. However if the CC file is stripped off in MacCaption and re wrapped WITHOUT CONVERSION, the sucker is fine. Intetestingly, CBS is using flipping software owned by the same company making MacCaption. They are working on it. If and when there is a solution I'll post here for others in the same canoe.
Interesting. MacCaption is a fairly recent purchase by Telestream. I would imagine the code base for MacCaption and other Telestream products have not merged yet. At this time, they have to batch jobs to MacCaption instead of doing a direct integration.
We just installed a Vantage system. I'll do some tests between our MC 7.0.4 systems and Vantage when I get a chance to see what happens. Not sure when that will be as I am still working on integrating the transcode system into our workflows... So far, the XDCamHD MXF Op1a files that I have received from others with SMPTE 436M caption data tracks have had no problems being transcoded to our Omneon.

Thanks for the response. Yeah.. let me know what you wind up with. Be interesting to see what you get.
The op1a exports are basic 50mbit vid / 24bit audio, 16x9.
ISSUE UPDATE
This issue has been SOLVED! It was determined CBS was using old software in their flip. I believe it is the Vantage. It needed to updated.
Thanks for the update. I had a suspicion it would be something on their end, but I didn't have enough data to voice that suspicion! Glad they got it worked out.
