Hi,
I have a big problem to authoring a DVD (PAL). (120 min, 16 Subtitle tracks, motion menus etc.).
I was to try AVID DVD 6.1.1
also last version 6.4.4
And also I try it on 4 different computers ( 8 to 16 RAM Memory)...
But it`s all over the same damned problem:
- you can work with avid dvd only for 5 min
- you edit somewhat: finish! next step... BREAK!
- Error Window: "Out of memory -1" or "Out of memory -19021"
- reboot, 1 edit step, reboot, 1 edit step, rebbot...
It`s a never ending story (and now I hear LIMAHL 24 hours
in my brain).
- also: sometimes I make a render test: AVID DVD
render it for approx 40 minutes... BREAK: the same error windows
Questions:
- Do one of you know THIS or SIMILAR problems?
- What can I do?
- Why are there no Updates or newer Versions of AVID DVD (last from 2011!?!?)
Hope one of you can help me.
specs:
wondows 7 ultimate, service pack 1
8 GB RAM memory (or 16 GB RAM)
CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9950 2.83 GHz
graphiccard: NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700
CPU Chip 4 x Pentium III
C: 1 TB
Motherboard Intel Coporation DP45SG
more about the project:
- 120 min are encoded with Sorenson Squeez (DVD authoring presets, 6000 kbits, 2 pass VBR,
also CBR)
- endcoded into .m2v or mpeg2, audio linked from .WAV to AC3
- Double Layer 8,5 GB project
- the 16 subtitles was imported by FAB Subtitler Files (Sonic DVD .TXT files)
You show 2 different CPU's which one? Both fairly old systems..
Are you working with only 1 harddrive~ not recommended.
Media storage and render should not be running on C drive.
Are your harddrives more than 75% full?
Avid DVD has not been developed much in the last few years...
Consider Authoring Works 5 from TMPgenc products:
http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/taw5.html
Using MC 22.12. Win 22H2 Avid FX6.4, Vegas Pro 20/ DVD Architect 6pro, DVDit6.4proHD, CCE Basic, TmpGe Express4, TmpGe Authoring Works 4, DVDLab-Studio. Sony EX-1R, Canon XH-A1, GL2, GL1, Canon EOS 60D
Hi John,
thxs!
I have make the project double (no quattro: 4 times on 4 different PCs).
Actually on Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9550 2.83GHz.
But my second PC is:
24 GB RAM Memory
Intel Core i7 CPU x990 3.47
NVIDIA Quattro 4000
... there is the same problem! all over is the same problem.
My systems are approxly 50-60% full.
Rendering not at C? Hmmm
Of course I have 3-4 HDDs, plus 1-2 Data Silos.
I would to start with TMPGnc, but last version I was see
can only 8 Subtitle tracks. The same problem I was have
with DVD-lab. (also DVD-lab can not make a chapter menu).
AVID DVD is best for me, but the software dont like me.
I have a DEADLINE end of this week, thats why I need urgend help.
(sorry for my english, i am german)
Or I must build a new project with Adobe Encore.
But I hope on more Tips for AVID DVD.
best wishes
Your English is fine. A couple of things :
Do not attempt to burn directly to disk, create a volume.
The source file should be from a defragmented file or disk partition. Douglas and I have noted heavily fragmented sources can cause authoring problems,
It is best not to go through Squeeze if possible, used Avid DVD to do the encode, as it often tries to reincode files anyway..
I have noticed that Avid DVD creates a large tmp directory over a period of time. The old ones should be removed.
Codecs installed by other programs can Hi-jack the processes from Avid DVD, do not allow ffdshow (installed by Squeeze to run)
Had the same codec interference with Sony DVD architect Lightworks was the culprit.
thank you very much again for your time.
Intersting what you write here:
- yes, it was succesful and a better way with first make a volume, then burn. we was try it last 2 times
and this method runs. BUT: we must(!) choose the badest birate and the quality was pixely-ugly.
(here we must find a better encoding preset for sorenson. we want 2-VBR, but in this moment AVID dvd
accept only 1-CBR etc etc.). We will see!
- also: yes we have a big "codec-salat" on our machine. because SORENSON & FAB-Subtitler ask for it.
the ffdshow-thing we a have two times here, and many other bad things:
(as a side note - for other authoring freaks, which have similar problems:
here the two softwares where I talk about:)
BITRATE VIEWVER

&
DVDPatcher

good luck!
I'd recommend you use a dual layer DVD for 2 hours of program..
Use Dolby ac-3 audio (256kbs), pcm (1500kbs) takes too much bitrate and reduces absolute video quality if you want to get that much program on single DVD.
I was following all your Tipps & Rules & Ideas, but ... it does not runs.
I am at my wit's end.
Avid DVD 6.1 and 6.4 are very unstable software packages. I you have to create a DVD and/or a Blu-ray then downmix the AVID timeline and export a large .mov file of at a least DNxHD 120 or an appropiate file for standard definition. (I use PAL because I live in Europe). Import this very large video file (often 100gb's or more for HD) into AVID DVD and drag it to the timeline. Import also a large PCM wav file as well.
One thing to consider. For blu-ray export from AVID MC as 709 for DVD export as RGB. So you will have to export 2 files. You do not have to re-author. Just drag the RGB (for DVD) over the 709 (HD) file in the AVID DVD timeline. Leave the audio file.
NB. 709 for DVD can look very washed out. Using an RGB export from AVID MC preserves the black tones.
Then set up your DVD (blu-ray) and let AVID DVD do the compression and size re-sampling (if creating DVD). This should work.
The resulting .m2v files can be copied from the AVID DVD temp directories. You can then import them into your project and drag the file onto the AVID DVD timeline replacing the giant .mov file. The audio file can stay. Chapter point remain on the timeline. This makes authoring changes much faster since recompression is no longer necessary.
Motion menus cannot have a video greater in size than 1gb and the data rate should not exceed 7500 bps. If greater then you will get an error message AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RECOVER. YOU WILL HAVE TO START THE ENTIRE PROJECT AGAIN. When all is well copy your entire project to a backup directory. If necessary you can restore by copying back to the same disk and directory as the original. This copy process has saved me many times.
If you have money then buy sonic scenarist pro standard definition for DVDs. or Sony Profesional "DoStudio" (DSA) for Blu-ray. DoStudio also have a very good AVC compressor. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/dostudio
In short AVID DVD is free and as such it is worth very little.
Hope this helps.

I had to agree that complex authoring projects often result in problems with the AVid DVD software. I've had to re-create many jobs again from scratch due to projects that just fail to work.
I'm fortunate enough to have Scenarist for SD DVD work and that is the bees knees for authoring.
For a job of that magnitude I'd strongly suggest using a more robust solution.
Avid DVD is great for outoutting a simple DVD from a timeline and that's my suggested use for it when teaching.
Even a simple menu with a few option is ok.

I also use (and have used for many years) Sonic Pro SD and was very pleased to find that it works with Win7 64bit. I have been using DoStudio for just over a year for BDs. Both are good products. Sonic Pro SD is somewhat heavy-handed and fairly expensive. DoStudio is a good financial compromise when compared to Scenarist HD and Sony Blu-disc. It does remain a great shame that the AVID DVD people never addressed stability issues.

I was under the impression that the Scenarist family had been laid to rest a while back (EOL)But, I guess I am wrong.......
