Hi all,
When I import an animation file made in After Effects (See attached QT Movie Inspector details), Avid MC 5.5.3 crashes. I also can't get the file to play in QuickTime (It'll open the file but all I see are 7 seconds of hi-rez black.) Any thoughts? Here are some system specs:
Media Composer 5.5.3
Mac OS 10.7.5 on Mac Pro with 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon & 24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
2 external G-Raid 6TB each (one with 1TB free, another with 2TB free)
A couple other clues:
1. The file imports just fine on our other system (MC 5.5.1 on Mac OS 10.6.__)
2. The file plays fine in QT on the 5.5.1 system with the older OS
Which QuickTime version are you using on the system that crashes?Which QuickTime version are you using on the 5.5.1 system?
Crashing sys is using QT 10.1. (It defaults to that when I dbl click to open) The system that doesn't crash defaults to QT 7, but the file also plays fine in QT 10. One correction -- our drives are G-Tech G Speeds, not G-raids. (Can't remember if G-Raids have those processors in them, but these G-Speeds don't.) Dunno if that matters, I've read sometimes big QTs won't play from certain kinds of external drives.
Do you have QT 7 on the "crashing" system? You can right click and say "Open With..." to open that file on QT 7 instead of QT X.

Strange, we don't have QT 7 on the "crashing" system. (Doesn't QT7 ship with Mac OS?) Anyway, would that affect why it crashes MC on import? This is only one file, but I will eventually have a ton of animated stills that we'll need to import into this ep, plus lower thirds and a few other graphic elements, so crashing on import is a problem...
The plot thickens, and I am not certain if I should open another thread, but thought I'd mention this here as it might offer some insight. I exported a QT Same as Source (no Avid codecs) from the "crashing system" and don't you know when I tried to play it back on that system in QuickTime 10.1, it wouldn't play?
Is the "crashing" system missing some plugin?
Have you tried installing the appropriate version 7.x for your Avid version on the "crashing" system? I would then try and play back the same as source file in QT 7 as a test.
I downloaded QT7 and tried to open both the original .mov file (the one that crashes Avid on import) and playing it crashed QT7. Then I tried playing the new export on QT7, that also crashed QT7. THen I tried importing the original .mov file that started the problem... That crashed Avid (again). Square 1...
Does the Operating system have anything to do with it? Mac OS 10.7.5
Thanks for the suggestion!
PS Tonight's SAS export played fine in QT on the *other* (non-crashing) system, FWIW.
How big is your files in size? I sometimes have come a cross that some large files don't copy properly. So might be worth trying to export a small file as a test and see if that works.
If I'm understand you right, the original file that crashes Avid *also* crashes QuickTime 7.
That leads me to believe that something is wrong with that file that perhaps is affected by something on that "crashing" system. You are using different OS versions, right?
That's correct, orig file that crashes Avid also crashes QT7. And the two systems do have different OS versions, also correct.
The "crashing" system is OS 10.7.5 running MC 5.5.3. This system does not play the AfterEffects-created file nor my QT-SAS export. My export crashed QT 7 (which I downloaded per above suggestion), as does the AfterEffects file. In QT 10.1 this file does not crash the software, but doesn't play back. Crashes Avid on import (segment fault error at thread 0x0).
Other system runs OS 10.6.8 running MC 5.5.1, and this system plays both the AfterEffects-created file fine and my QT-SAS export fine. Has both QT 7 & QT 10.1
I haven't yet had success importing a high quality QT, only h.264s which I won't be able to do once we start finalizing graphics & high-res archival.
Was just talking with someone about this who said not having QT Pro on the system might be the thing... Could that be it?
I was able to test importing the file again tonight after having installed QT 7. It still crashes Avid on import. Please, any thoughts?
Are you on 5.5.3.6? Because that is the only qualified release for OSX10.7.5.
