Quick question. Are any of you getting faster than realtime when transcoding Go Pro media, or any quicktime based media for that matter?

I can't get it to see it via AMA. I don't think there's an AMA plugin for Go Pro.  I do a straight import to DNxHD 175X (thus, I need to transcode) and it took 50 seconds for a 43 second clip.  So no, on my end it isn't faster than real time.

What are your specs?

I get faster than real time with my specs below for DSLR H.264. It takes about 45 sec for 1 min clip (DNX 175).

2.3 Ghz i7...MacBook Pro 2012.  16GB RAM.

MP4 and H.264 are different.  I get faster speeds with my DSLR too.

Yes and no. MP4 is a container, just like QT. H.264 is a encoding profile that can be in MP4 file format.

Both DSLR and GoPro uses H.264 as the encoding format. Canon DSLR uses QT as its container while GoPro uses MP4.

If you have a test file (10 sec or more), I can give you numbers with my system. Laptops in general will be slower with the desktop CPU counterparts (assuming chipset/CPU are relatively close in digital age).

You are still on Avid 5.5, which is solid when file importing. In Avid 6 that is not the case, even when transcoding via AMA it's realtime at best.

That is just the profile I have not updated. I have 6.03 as my main and 6.5 in my "test drive OS drive".

Well, they must be compressed differently, or something. I get better, faster import times with my Canon DSLR than I do with my GoPro

Do you have any applications or utilities installed like Perian?

I bring GO PRO Files into a program called QT Change to give the files Timecode.

Then, I link to those files via AMA. The files are located on a Shared Storage Drive over Fiber, and I then transcode to 15:s.

If the file is 1hr in length, it will take 1 hr to transcode. What do you think is happening?

That's interesting. I thought QT Change only worked on Quicktime files. Or is GoPro now producing something other than .MP4s?

Also I think the H264 implentation in Gopro files is slightly non-standard...

MP4s have the QT icon on my computer...so they open in QT by default.

And no Perian on this machine.

If someone can upload a 10 secs or more clip I can test.

Shane, "QT Change" is a utility written by Video Toolshed. http://www.videotoolshed.com/products

it has nothing to do with the Quicktime Player. it works by modifying the header of a QT file.
