Using Avid MC 6.0.1 on an iMac.  Have not had problems before, but now everytime I try to start Avid, it stops when "Initializing Avid Media Access Volume Manager" stays on that for about 25 seconds and then a small dialog box appears that says "Invalid file name" to which I click OK and Avid is closed.

Any help is much appreciated!

In your AMA files, make sure you do not have a "/" in the naming structure somewhere.

Disconnected a drive that the computer was trying to link to and that solved the problem.

What about the name of the folder that file is located in? Is there a "/" in it?

No, no "/"

OK, if it's a quicktime movie file, for video import the file extension should be .mov. See these details on .avx files.

Larry, I think that this is the name of the ama plugin, more likely is that ClemAvid have an uncorrect media file in the root of one of his drives

Just check your drives if you have any " loose " media files in the root of them , create folders and put those files inside of those folders or move them to wanted folders on other places .

Any "illegal" characters in the file path will cause problems.  "Illegal" means characters that can be used by the OS for file operations.  On the Mac it's a colon ( : ), on Windows it's almost anything that isn't a letter or a number.  If you've got a folder or file named "Xmas Party 12/24/10" you'll have problems while "Xmas Party 12-24-10" will be OK.  When in doubt, remove anything suspicious 

Regarding the illegal character issue.  Most of us know not to use them in drive and folder names as is mentioned previously.  Check this out.  I had all my AMA volumes go offline without warning.  Double checked every drive, folder and file name.  All good.  Turns out it was a STORE BOUGHT CD from Rhino records that had a forward slash and a 2 quotes in the name of the disc as it showed on the desktop.  Wasn't playing or anything.  Just having it in the tray spun down was enough to make all AMA volumes offline to the Avid.  Ejected it and boom, everything back online.  For the record, no pun intended, all rhino records "Top rock ' roll hits" CDs have this illegal naming convention.  Example:

Billboard Top Rock 'N' Roll Hits/ 1974

Is the name of one of them.  Beware of illegal CDs!  They count as a volume.

Having gotten the above same error -- I started going through all the drives, etc to check on illegal characters... and low and behold... I too had a Rhino Record  - Danny Gatton Anthology --that stopped my Symphony from launching.  Thanks for the help y'all!   I appreciate your time and help!
